Hi,

I'm a first time beemer owner and I realised there's no oil/water temp gauge for me to monitor. Tried looking up at the manual and found nothing.

Any gurus care to share?

Most cars don have oil temp guages, as for water temp, unless models like 335, etc, else there wont be any water temp indicators. Have to install after market products.

When you see steam coming out from the hood, the water is 100 degrees C. :)

Easiest way, I think, is to buy a bluetooth OBD2 reader and hook it up with your smartphone. I'm doing that now, and can read a whole ton of other parameters such as throttle, volts, rev, engine load, etc...

If you're using an Android, you may wanna give the Torque app a try (there's a free version).

Well, actually mine reads 102degC when properly warmed up.... So far no steam from hood... :nehnehhh:

Re: How do I get to know the oil/water temp?

water/coolant under pressure will only boil above 125-130degC
this is dependant on the pressure of the coolant system

in the uk our thermosats open at 110-115degC by water temp and also use map cooling, this is where the engines ECU sends an electric feed to the stat unit to open the thermostat earlier if it sees the engine out let temp rising quickly say under hard acceleration

you can buy after market water and oil temp gauges,

on the oil temp, you will need to tap in the the engine sump to fit the pick up temp sensor
