HK vs SG transportation

HK has more people, more cars, higher population density, higher GDP/capita

STILL

It has no ERP, OMV, COE, PARF, taxi surcharges

YET

Their cars are 50% cheaper
Traffic is smoother
Their buses and MTRs are more regular and accessible
Their taxis are cheaper, and always available

WHY?

Singapore taxes demand, HK fixes supply

Re: HK vs SG transportation

HK petrol is more expensive. Parking fees are pricey. Roads are narrower and not much place to speed.

But in some area like Tung Chung highway, you can go up to 150km/h where there are no speed cameras. Cars are so cheap by SG standard. MTR is world-class. No delays at all in any lines. When it says arrive in 2 mins, it is on the dot again and again and again. HK is a taxi haven like Tokyo but without the hefty passenger fee tag.

SG will never par up to this level. Just ask any expat who have lived in both cities about their transport systems. Most will spat saliva at LTA and our transport ministry.

Re: HK vs SG transportation

HK maid also can be foreign talent. Singapore, maid cannot - but everyone else is a foreign talent.

Re: HK vs SG transportation

HK now 20 degree celsius vs SG 30 degree celsius. Even drive a convertible is more shiok without the sweltering heat.

Re: HK vs SG transportation

Hong Kong:
- Petrol more expensive
- Need to pay toll at many tunnels, esp when crossing the sea from HK to Kowloon and vice versa
- Car park more expensive, but Singapore also not cheap in downtown; many office buildings have limited lots, got money also may be cannot park
- Car purchase price is cheaper, about half
- Taxi -- easily available only after 1997 financial crisis; before 1997 people had to fight over taxis; no organised taxi company, so no investment into GPS, automated booking system etc; taxi licence very expensive; taxis' area of operations limited by licence (e.g. red cabs can go anywhere, green cabs only for NT)
- MTR well connected with commercial/residential buildings with less distance between stops (since higher density population)

Relatively more HK people use public transport to go to work (mostly MTR, public buses, 小巴); few people drive to work place, even if they have cars they keep for family use mainly weekends

Re: HK vs SG transportation

If MRT as efficient as MTR, I think less road hoggers liao, thus free-flowing traffic..

Re: HK vs SG transportation

Because we are road hogger mah.

FT do what Singaporean do in Singapore.

Re: HK vs SG transportation

When I was last there, during peak hours the MTR trains come almost every 30seconds. Singapore is calling for tender for new technology to reduce the 120s waiting time to 100s, slowly implementing it until 2015.
