High Octane Fuel

Not only that, higher octane fuel is also likelier to cause cancer than lower octane fuel.

My take is to comply with manufacturer's minimum recommendation.
If not slightly higher is fine but not below.

Cheers bro

the article is generally right, but assumes conditions allow for knockless operation. in singapore heat and/or under high loads, this may not be true.

for relatively stock NA BMWs..

read knock sensor or ignition timing activity via OBD. if there is activity, start increasing octane slowly, reset ECU, and drive it the same way in the same weather, also checking OBD. knock sensor activity and ignition timing retard should both have reduced.

increase octane till no knock is seen, ignition is not retarded, or ignition goes to highest amount of advance. The octane level you arrive at it the right octane for the conditions and state of tune of the engine.

why is this so lei? :screwedu:

That's because of the substance of higher octane it contains.
It's mentioned in recent article I read in some bmw car mag.

i think the substance is benzene. carcinogenic.

what shaun say is right. unless we plug in the pda to check knock values and ignition retard values, we also dunno if it's useful or not.

but i'm pretty sure if we pump in 95ron, there'll be an increase in knock prevention from the engine. no good. one day should your knock sensor suddenly fail, your engine will slowly ping itself to piang heaven.

also, too high octane also no use for normal engines and may even cause loss of power, as the activation energy may not be enough to break up the bigger macromolecule bond for complete combustion.

98

Then why do the petrol stations try to sell the V-Powers and other premium petrol? I mean, if even a premium car like BMW doesn't really need it, who will the target market be?

Target market isnt really an issue here, I am sure there are many BMW or Merc owners out there use premium fuel. Mobil/Esso's premium fuel is 8000synergy which is much cheaper than V-power but considered premium for that brand name and guess what, it's so popular.

I hv pumped 95 before (not that I wanted to try but that was during track day in Sepang so no choice) and man, it's different from my regular 98!

Was using Synergy 8000 before I was handed the Shell Fleet Card. Must say that I find Mobil petrol tend to last alot longer than Shell petrol. Not sure how true it is..just my own opinion.

Have not used Mobil in SG yet. Been using either Castrol and Shell. Shell gives me better mileage with V-Power

Was told that if you have to pump malaysian petrol, you better have some octane booster on hand... if not your engine might not make it back to sing...
