Hi all,

I am really interested to get a year2005 520i, can some of you shed some lights?
1) what special features come with the car?
2) Is the maintenance fee high?
3) What are the common parts need to be changed after 80k km travelled and its respectively charges?
4)I always heard about the repair cost for BMW parts are unreasonably high, so i wonder it is true as well,

I am currently driving a Evo10, however, i would like to get a better daily drive 520i, pls helps to comment, thanks.

Regards.

Yr2005 520 is still using the old engine.. Old gearbox and its the key start model . This particular batch of 520 is well known to be problematic especially after 3 years.

First it will be active steering problem , 1 in 3 gets that.. Then the gearbox.. Almost guaranteed to give u problem after 120k km or even earlier . Then air con compressor.. Then electrical and many sensors.

I would suggest u get the new facelifted 520i which is produced in 2008.. Its inline 4 instead of the old inline 6 but its a much better quality build and has improved reasonably frm the older batches.. If budget permits a 523 or 525 will be even better.

Maintenance fee is not high.. I would say about the same or maybe lower than a modded evo.. An oil change ranges between 200-300 every 10k km to 15k km .. Brake pads cost about 800-1k for all 4..

After 80k km.. My previous car has got many problems already.. Which was also the notorious 04/05 520i .. Which is why it was replaced by the 523 eventually in 2006..

80k km.. Lightbulbs start to blow.. ( 200-300 bucks ) bushings and mountings ( 1k - 1.5k ) my steering rack n pinion was leaking ( warranty ) air con compressor 1k.. Water pump + thermostat ( warranty )

Most wear and tear parts are easily replaced , the only problem u will worry the most will be electrical.. Car can happy happy come out christmas tree warning light ( famous in the old 520 )

Coming frm an ex 520 owner I would say get the 523 or the Facelifted 520 instead.. I would say only look at facelifted model.. The pre facelift models also have an inferior interior quality in my opinion..

Honestly.. Merc and audi is better..

i would say if it just need reasonable sum to replace parts i m still ok with it, what i afraid of is the intermittent undetectable failures on electrical parts or like gearbox, engines that need major overhaul,i m totally fine with it. Even the new evo also has a lot problem as u can read from the forums.

I will continue to hunt about the common prob of year 05 520i, hope that it is still acceptable.

But i still hopes that every 520users can share some user comment, especially the year 05cars. Or if u hav friends using it, pls get their comment from me as well, thanks all

i have sen at least 5 of my friends driving E60 with gearbox problems... jerks when stopping and such... usually come after 100k km mileage..

2 of them were lucky enuff to solve it by changing gear oil... and do some reprogramming ( i dunno what has reprogramming got to do with gear jerks... but apparently it does and PML does it too... )

3 of them in the end paid almost 15k...i dunno for wad..change wad... and do what.... @PML

Re: Hi all, pls helps to give some comments

bro Terry, so this particular BMW (year 04) also possible to have the gearbox issue?

Re: Hi all, pls helps to give some comments

The M54 engine it seems that many of them experience gearbox issue after 3 years..

Try to go for push start button N52 523.. Or the new 4 cyl 2008 520i

that year08 520i is definitely out of my budget, and the car I am interested in sgcarmart is already sold, too bad....

Re: Hi all, pls helps to give some comments

Hamann520, BMW may not be cheap to upgrade. Even on my E39. Because of age & mileage. Factor that into your budget.

Re: Hi all, pls helps to give some comments

The e39 got better build quality.. I see all the old e39 is so much better than first batch e60..

Try to consider e39..

From personal experience, the yr05 320i has given me some problems :

Exterior wise - leakage of oil with burnt smell after 60k (cost me ard $1k to fix), other than that not biggie prob.

Interior Wise - Had the grey colour interior and was really annoyed with the seemingly self bleaching/colour bruising of leather at the door handles. I had it replaced a couple of times from PML and the problem still persist (was told perfume and excessive sweat will cause this ...)

So if you are getting one off someone, I would suggest getting dark interiors.
