HHeadlight casing pitted by debris - how to remedy? and prevention?

Hi all,
....small stones flung up from the car in front have pitted the headlight covers ...suggestions please on how to remove these pits from the headlight casing?.....any suggestions also on how to protect the headlights from such future damage? Any plastic headlight covers for E90? Thanks for advice.
