Help..................Power Steering moaning!!

Hi there,

I hope someone can help me...................I love my BMW 320 but its driving me nuts!!

The power steering groans and whines when I turn the steering and its even making noises when the car is stationary...

I want to check for steering fluid, but have no idea how to or how I would put the fluid in if that is in fact what is wrong it it.

My poor baby has a multitude of bad habits (including an electric window which will go up when it feels like it, but mostly stops an inch from the top) and I now want it back to the way it was.

SO if anyone can help me...................PLZ

Which model is it E46 ..E90 .....? THe power window is stopping because the rubber guides need to cleaned. A good dose of silicon spray would probably help that matters. If the windos go up by themselves then the switch must be faulty. A quick was to check this is to engage window lock nect to the drivers door in E90 or in the centre console in the E46..

your electric window requires recalibration. Please read the manual or go to BMW service centre to recalibrate.

As for your power steering, you need to do a trace. Under advice from your CSE, put red ATF into the power steering hydraulic system and then over the next few days check for leaks. If no leaks at all, I guess, time to replace the pump.

These are the times where we really wish for electric power steering.

trust me, your pump is on its way out.....just replace it and it'll be fine. happened to me too. what is the mileage?

the groaning sound could just be the metal piece between the steering wheel and the main steering column thingy....its like a big piece of ring where u fit it in and then the wheel

if u dont touch the steering and it still whines when the engine is running, trust me...no other thing except yur pump

the surest way is to bring in to the workshop for a check, no use losing sleep over it cos u can't physically solve it yourself. spend some money, get a peace of mind

sounds like the same problem as mine.....mechanic checked & confirm the pressure hose is leaking......changed the return hose & pressure hose bought from Eng Soon at $94+.....

Can you describe the sgroaning ound u heard when u steer? Is it like a click click sound?

I think it is due to the power steering pump.

My E36 too have this problem at times and the mechanic told me the power steering pump is failing. Sometimes, the steering will emit a humming noise when I turn the steering wheel. For me it intermittent thus its still not much of a problem right now.
