Re: hello

If u have to decide between 318i and a 320i, consider the latter. In the used car mkt, the price gap between the 2 is very much narrowed.

Re: hello

From 0 to overload now:

1. have been adviced to get the 320i by many but unsure of the differences between the 318 and 320, mainly confused by terms like steptronics/ valvetronics/ double vanos/ 16 vs 24 cylinders??? err.. which goes with which. are they describing the same thing?

2. As much as the 320 is preferred, there does not seem to be many of the 3-4yr olds in the market. where can i find more other than the papers and sgcarmart.com?

3. When negotiating with the dealer, how much can you usually bargain down from the asking price? does 5k sound like asking for the sky?

appreciate any advice :)

Re: hello

Hi,

I just acquired a 316iA after weeks of intensive search. It's an excellent performer in comparison with the 320 series. Body, interior is the same except engine. Power is good enough for Spore road unless you are going up north.

The 318s comes in 1.9L (110bhp) and 2.0L (I think 150bhp). The 2.0L engine of this 318 is the one that is commonly called the "valvetronic" and replaced the 1.9L in either late 2001 or beginning 2002. The 318s are all 4 cylinders are some call them 4 potters.

The 320i comes in 2.0L (150bhp) and 2.2L (170bhp). The 2.2L replaced the 1.9L in early 2001. The 320s are all 6 cylinders and BMW is famous for its silky 6 cylinders.

Steptronics is basically a BMW term for describing its gearbox that allows you to manually shift the gear if u wish to (but without clutch).

Double vanos and all those jazz juz goes to describe other aspects of the engine and u need not know too much abt them at this juncture ro u will be confused further

To give u a price indication, a May 2002 318i was sold to a dealer for $85k region.

No rocket science on how much to bargain from a dealer. Depends on dealer's asking price in the first place rite? As long as u know what kind of depreciation to look for, and work backwards using the OMV and COE and understand which PARF system the car is under, no dealer can take u for a ride. Be prepared to pay $8k depreciation per yr for 318i and maybe $8.5k to $9k for a 320i as a rough guide.
