Headlight relays

I've read from past threads about headlight relays eg from Bosch that are able to brighten up those white headlights. However, it did not explain how did it work.
Does it work by
1. after installing the relays, the same light bulb will be brighter. OR
2. after installing the relays, one may use bulb of higher voltage so that the bulb will be brighter??
Are installing of these relays LTA compliant??

Re: Headlight relays

IMO, a relay is simply a magnetic switch to transfer current direct from your battery to the lights assembly. Your switch control its function, when you turn on the switch, the relay makes the transfer, if swtich off, the circuit is "opened", hence no current flow. In this sense it does not do anything for the brightness of your bulb except to power it or not.

To have brighter lights, you need to change your bulb to a higher wattage one and at the same time, change an appropriate fuse to allow higher wattage through. The equation is Volts x Amp = Watt. Hence for a 12V battery, a 10amp fuse will allow a max draw of 120 Watt.

As long as your light bulbs remains as your original setup there isn't much problem with LTA regulation. Changing from filament bulbs to HID for example may get you into trouble if your car model originally does not comes with HID. As to what type of bulbs can be used, there are alot in the market that actually does not comply, so it's best to check out LTA site or onemotoring.com for more info.

During the routine inspection, at most, the mechanical will advise you have them changed to something that's approved (happened to me). However, I do not know the consequence one may face in a road-block for example.

If those blue bulbs is what you are looking for, so far it looks like the Philips brand is approved, so keep the box in your car as proof.

Hopes the info helps. Cheers and Merry X'mas... err.. X'mas lights in your car definitely not approved though...

Re: Headlight relays

Thanks alot jawzsg~ very enlightening... Don't think will fit any X'mas lights though, haha...
Btw, most bulbs the bulbs used has ratings of 55W only am i right?? There are bulbs that have ratings of 120W?? I checked the range of Philips Crystal Vision on their website and only 12V 55W are present for H7 bulbs

Re: Headlight relays

Yep.. so long as they are 55W, you don't need to upgrade your fuse..unless you go for those 110W or 120W. Philip Crystal Vision is not mistaken burns at 4300K, I think the Diamond Vision is a 5000K which will be very close to Xenon quality, but do check the watts.

Err.. since you are not gonna put in any X'mas light.. can pass them to me.. me tree quite barren.. kekekeekkek.. CHeers

Re: Headlight relays

Thanks jawzsg for the clarification~!!! You have Merry Christmas ya~ all i'm left are the stock H7 for your barren tree, hee, see you around.

Actually I'm running on some japanese brand rated 4500K for almost 1.5years already. I'm quite doubtful about changing to 5000K ones as it might get even dimmer. So i tot if there is anyway of making it brighter

Hi Huexun,

I personally feel that Philips Diamond Vision 5000K is the best, I strongly recommend it. I've been using it on my current ride, quite durable, I said so cos I've been using it for more than 3 years liao. It's the brightest bulb I can find in the market, white with a slight blue tint, apart from the HIDs on the road.

But some of my friends who are using the same DV 5000K, but H4, the colour seemed to have a slight difference. So, I feel that it's better to you to see the colour & brightness lights physically before you decide to buy any. Should you need to see mine, you can contact me, 90111107.

Cheers..

Re: Headlight relays

Wah.. thankz for the H7, 4500K, tree would probably look more like a lamp pole.. kekeke..

I'm also using the Jap's 4500K blue bulb thingy and they are dim as dim can be.. I never turn them on most of the time.. (except for the occasion checking). Just drive wif me Sharky Demon Eyes...good enough.. kekekekeke

cheers
