Good paint job

Just wanted to share with brothers and sisters here of a paint shop that i used recently.

After trawling the BM board, I sent my own kit to the shop 3 days before i sent my car in for it to be installed. I discussed with the owner of the shop and it was agreed that 3 days would be enough for them to prime and paint my kit for it to be ready for installation.

On the 3rd day, i sent my car in morning and picked it up in the evening.

During pick up, i did a once over in the sunset light was pretty satisfied with what i saw. Before I left, I was told to comeback 1 week later for a follow up polish when the paint had settle ( Pretty professional I thought, as this is the first time a shop had actually said something like this and meant it)

Early next morning, i parked it in the sunlight and went through it with a fine tooth comb. All systems go.

Brought it back a week later and there was a slight lump on my PU back spoiler. I also informed them of a scratch on my front lip spoiler, a scratch on my rim and a little overspray on my mirror. Was told to pick up at 6 in the evening.

When I arrived they were still sanding my spoiler down, I learnt that there were air bubbles under the paint in the PU and they had decided to re-sand the whole section.

All this cost me was an extra 30 mins of time but for the scratches that I caused myself, they were fixed to my satisfaction and I wasn’t even charged extra to boot.

All this time the boss was so apologetic that I actually felt bad.

During this whole process, the boss was inside the hot oven herself and using the heat gun on the painted section and directing the rest of the guys to polish the other sections. (All this was happening in the Hot Oven, ie I knew because I opened the door and was greeted with a blast similar to that of a hair dryer set on high)

I finally collected my car at 645 and I tell u, they even took the initiative to give the whole car a quick polish.

I personally can confirm the dedication and effort put in by this shop and their level of professionalism shown in their work.

Thanks for everything Angie. You’ve got a new convert. Keep up the good work.

Re: Good paint job

good to hear of your pleasant experience.....very good service oriented.
but spraying whole car is different from spraying parts only so it still pays to be cautious...just like my usual workshop, they are good at spraying parts but crap at whole car...haha

Re: Good paint job

Last week me too send in a 6er spoiler to the same shop to be painted and unfortunately during installation its was raining and they had to use some kind of duct tapes to secure the spoiler due to the rain and the silicon won't be able to dry up on time, and was ask to remove the duct tape myself the next day. The worker told me after removing the tapes and if found gum stains can't be remove i can go back to them and get a polish to remove it. 2 days later went back to them to get a polishing on the boot to remove the gums, while polishing i notice there are some scratches on my bonnet and ask i Angie if she could do anything to it and she went up to a worker and asked him to help me do some sanding on that area followed by a polishing. After everything was done i went up to her to ask how much would i have to pay, she just smiled and waved her hands, felt embarrast and i notice a ubin kopitiam opposite her shop so went up there to topao kopi for her and the staffs.

Looks like my car is in good hand, been there 8days (include sat & sun).

Don't Polish Freshly Painted Car!!! Will Bubble!!!

why do you say that? after it is baked, you can polish same day

Re: Good paint job

Car factory baking differs from paint shop ovens.

Car factory does a 2 stage baking process - half hour 60C initial bake to harden and dry inner layer, then one hour 120C bake to re-soften the paint for reflow, and further vaporize the inner layer.

Aftermarket paint jobs are ill documented, and may not have a reflow oven or 2 stages of baking, simply because such high temps may be difficult to reach safely in a fully assembled car.

So to be on the safe side, I am wary of polishing and sealing cars less than 3 months after the paint job.

Of course, Yew Lip may be the bees knees and do an incredible job, but then again, I've seen bubbles appear not (I think) because of the paint shop problem, but sealing the car after a respray.

Re: Good paint job

the first stage is to bake the undercoat and sealer, every paint shop does that.

for any 2k paint, once its baked, thats it, its baked. then leave it in gaya's oven for a day, and it will be ok to wet rub and machine polish

its not liek the old days of acrylic paint where you had to wait a few months for it to harden

Re: Good paint job

The 2 stages I mentioned are post lacquering. In factory primer layers are baked way before that at 140C. This was from the course I went through for fun during a factory visit.

We definitely are not at the good old days of acrylics. To play it safe still, I think I can hands off the paint for 3 months. after that just use a gentle pre-polish prep abrasive as polish, or even claybar, then carnauba. No harm done by the 3 month delay...
