hi,

planning to go germany in june (summer) for 2 weeks.
want to cover austria and czech republic too.
most likely taking spore - frankfurt.

spore -> frankfurt -> munich (bmw!!!) -> austria (vienna) -> czech (prague) -> leipzig -> frankfurt

any suggestions ? thanks !

Re: Germany tour

drive / train / fly / combination of all 3?

if drive - roads are very nice and easy to navigate even without gps.
frankfurt --> munich via autobahn at between 150-180km/hr should be about 3-4hrs non-stop. this distance is about 340+ km..almost same as s'pore --> KL. we just did this stretch mid-march and took about 2 1/2hrs non-stop.
munich to vienna 8-10hrs average speed as above depending on stamina..20yrs ago we did this stretch less than 8hrs but now, close to 10.
sorry cant advise you after munich as we have not been further east than vienna.
from my european colleagues' feedback driving in the former easter bloc is slightly tricky due to robberies.

STUTTGART!! Must go if you're interested in automotive stuff! Visit the Merc and porsche museum!

Re: Germany tour

Berlin is interesting ...but out of the way...a lot of fierce mafia cars there.

But seriuously u want to see solid blondes...u need to go Copenhagen..

Re: Germany tour

I would say ditch Frankfurt. Fly into Munich (SQ has a direct flight). Take a car and drive to Berchtesgaden. Stay there - visit the Eagle's nest (hitler's hideaway). Then drive through Austria onto czech etc. Frankfurt doesnt have much to see as such, neither does Munich. Berlin probably is the best part out of the cities but again.

And if you can manage - try and take in the GrossGlocknerStrasse. One of the prettiest roads in the world that I have ever driven on. I didnt manage to do the pass as it was snowing heavily but it was FUN!

Depends on your choice of going for a holiday. Mine was relaxation and snow. Austria was enough for that.

You should buy a 2 weeks rail-pass... vy efficient rail system in europe and take only 1st class seats...try not to do overnight rail :)

I would suggest from Prague to go budapest... Slovenia...Venice...Milan...Swiss....Back to Germany :)

I love Eastern Europe! Cheaper and cold weather! Cheap beer n the ladies in the streets of Prague are all so model-look!!! all tall with slim beautiful legs.... :)

Go enjoy urself!

Re: Germany tour

thanks everyone for your tips and suggestions ....
the current plan for transportation is rail-pass ... unless i get more information on driving and up for the challenge ... but the likelihood is low as wifey strongly object driving for various reasons
my last europe trip had covered london -> paris -> brussel -> amsterdam. i have also visited switzerland in a separate trip.
so this round, will try to cover some other countries start from germany :)
