Gear Stuck at #1 for few minutes during Cold Start

Hi,

Just wondering if any of you has the same experience and solution to my problem.

During cold start, my auto transmission tends to be stuck at #1 for a few minutes and refuse to move up. After a while, between 2 minutes to 5 minutes, the gear will then shift up automatically and everything will be absolutely normal for the entire day.

Was thinking of going for an ATF Flush and replaceing the fluid.

Mine is an E36 320i M50 engine and doing close to 200K KM.

Thx.

I think it's normal. The E36 works that way. It's one of the way to get the working parts to get to working temperature faster and also, shifting gears when the component are not fully warmed up will accelerate wear.

My previous E36 and one of my buddy one works like that also...Once warmed up and it's back to normal... :)

Have u changed the auto transmission oil and its filter yet? Do so, this 1st gear stucks for while before upshifting i also had encountered before. After changing the oil and its filter it would be back to smooth shifting. Sometimes this could due to low oil level or oil had not been changed for a long time, this is based on my experience.Good luck!

Thanks for the advise. I believe Ersalle is right on.

When I first got the car last September, it does not have such problem for a few weeks. So I don't quite think it is "normal" as piggyboyz said. Sorry but that's my observation.

cheers,

Both the old and new gearboxes of my e34 520i M50 5spd auto did not do this, though the old one loved to be stuck to 3rd gear! Maybe same gearbox as yours? mine is a ZF 5HP18.

Our family's old E34 520i used to take damn long to shift to second in the mornings. It would just drag in first gear before relenting, though i don't think it was a full 2 minutes of revving.

My mom used to say the engine is so loud while she tries to get it to second that dogs in our neighbourhood actually look up to see what's making all the racket....

:nehnehhh: Your mom is right to complain about the Loudness - cos when she step hard, the rev just goes up but not the damn gear. I am not sure if one presses hard enough on the accelerator to push the rev to 4K rpm will the gear move up or gave in altogether (kaput).

I heard just saw somewhere that ATF flush can be done at Stamford Tyres for $30 labor. Wonder if they do E36?

I also saw somewhere that there are some ATF flushing fluid (I believe it is Redline stuff) that can be used to help clean the damn transmission system before going for a flush. Anybody ever tried and got any idea about this? :(

cheers,....
