Fume from exhaust

My ride is E60 M54. Is it normal for the exhaust to smell real bad alittle like unburnt fuel when you 1st start the car? Didnt notice this until people told me when i started my car in the drive way that the smell is intoxicating. It goes away after awhile. Normal exhaust smell if after. Any comments? TIA.

Re: Fume from exhaust

Dun think too much of it. In the morning, the car senses the cooler temperature and richens the AFR a little to aid starting. As the Cats are also stone cold, this unburnt petrol goes straight out. That's why the owners manual tells you to begin driving immediately but slowly to speed up this warming up.

Alls fine... take it easy.

Cheers

Re: Fume from exhaust

Like Yendor says, cold start:

1) AFR is rich, so burns more fuel
2) Cats not warmed up, so fumes not cleaned up properly

Normal.
