Fuel consumption improved drastically - do not know why

Bros, I have notice that my FC has improved from the usual 410 - 430km per tank to 500+km per tank in the last 2 fill ups! In fact at the 1/2 tank mark today, I have already travelled 302km! I have bought my cab last Oct when it was 4.5 years old and has been monitoring the FC since. There was a drop in FC when I first install my CAI and Supersprint by 10-20km per tank but when back to the normal 400+ km per tank after I go back to my usual driving habit. I have not change the fuel used(Caltex 95) nor my daily route.

So the only thing I can attribute this too is that I have been driving with my top down (mostly with aircon off but sometimes with aircon on as well) more often lately. Could this be the reason or is there something else? I am not complaining for sure but just curious to find out the reason for the FC eficiency.

mine is e90 320.....going 550km.....easily.....

i added the k&n filter, sprint booster and sebring exhaust....feel the FC is pretty allrite too.

pump 95 too....

or may be ur wife reset a little bit to make you excited....

My is now 550km per tank as well. However, I think, my car is heavier than E90.

or may be ur wife reset a little bit to make you excited....

No lah. I always reset myself. My wife have to do something else to make me excited. Resetting the odometer will not help .

Maybe it's becos u were driving more without air-con.... u use a lot less fuel this way.

the fuel gauge going a bit off...??The last time when my fuel consumption was improving, i ran out of gas at the 1/4 fuel remaining mark. Arrrghh

Running more on freeway .... that is a possibilty. Between East to West on ECP & AYE to work and back. Weekend shopping driving my BUS. You may be right!

You may be doing one of these few things :

1. More evening cruises made with your top off and Aircon off.
2. Made 2 or more to and fro trips more than normal using Expressways (non peak hour) amounting to more than 50km
3. Removed some heavy item from your boot
4. Been watching the fuel econometer closely and trying to keep it less than 10L/100km most of the time when driving

When I do any of the above, confirm my FC improves.

Just wanted to know whether your modification be used on my E36 318i to improve my FC. cause from my previous calculation for 59litres I only manage 435km.

Hey cgoh... I am using the exactly same car as you. i am running 430-450 at full tank. I am using synergy 8000 from esso. I was told that 2 liter cars cannot use to cheap petrol... is it true? So what are all the difference in petrol? Now i super confuse, don't know what petrol to use...

i could attribute it to the cooler weather as the car would have less strain during these times.

Fuel doesn't really matter though unless your car is already tuned for high octance fuel. You can use 95 fuels w/o any issues.

Guys, the sticker on your filler cap says it all. The manufacturers recommendation is 98-91 octane. The ECU will change to adapt to the quality of fuel. 98 is recommended to give maximum power as temperatures are hotter here in Asia. Increased intake temperatures only increases the chances of detonation. if you don't floor the 'happy' pedal, chances are the ECU may not retard the ignition timing for 95 fuel as there is no detonation sensed.

One of the most reasonable explainations is the cooler temps that you are driving in and the increased expressway driving. I travel on KJE/BKE and SLE everyday and i get about 530km when the top up light comes on.. me have 2.2L..

Remember to have correctly inflated tires too...

I can nick down 600K+ when I was working in the holiday period going on the motoroway everyday...

But now I am only doing about 520~550 when just going home to school etc...I usually dont have AC because its cold in NZ haha but window is usually down...I do 98 at the pumps...
