Front and rear same better?

Hi any bros out here know of the pros and cons of having same front/rear tyres (eg. front and rear 225/40/18 ) vs a staggered setup (eg. front 225/40/18 and rear 255/35/18 )?

Thanks.

Having a wider set up in the rear gives you a better grip and handling. That is because you hv more rubber. It works better for a lot more powerful car where a lot of torque goes to the rear wheel ( in a way it kinda increases the weight to reduce excessive wheel spin)

Of coz having a staggered set up means u can't rotate your tires front and back.

If you are already on the staggered set up rims + tires, stick to it...
Else if you are not, then don't bother doing the staggering. To improve the handling slightly, u can add a 10mm spacers at the rear and see the result. It's fantastic!

simply - a larger rear for RWD car means more lateral grip and less wheelspin at launch.

what model do you have?

unless you are making decent power at the rear wheels (i.e 300 hp and up), there really is no point going for a staggered set up

Re: Front and rear same better?

Sorry but what are spacers and how do they improve handling? Expensive?

Re: Front and rear same better?

Thanks for the comments bros. Looks like this topic has been discussed before. However, no one seemed to comment on whether having non-staggered setup improves (1) fuel consumption; (2) acceleration (when not wheel-spinning). I think it does.

Overall, I guess the difference is minimal. Staggered setup seems to make the most difference only if the car has considerable power (prob over 300bhp). The biggest advantage of having a non-staggered setup is probably $$$ savings in the long run.

I'm currently on staggered and my front tyres have worn out. Rears look like they can go at least another 5000km. Should I change both front and rear or just front? Will having less "grippy" rear tyres pose any handling problems?

Re: Front and rear same better?

if you ahve a non staggered set up, then your total tire width will be less (and also lighter), hence less rollnig resistance. so yes you will save some FC, but hwo much i couldnt say.

similarly, if you are not talking about power that will easily induce wheelspin with skinnier tires, i think you will have equal if not better acceleration with thinner tires, simply due to weight savings.

as you have a staggered set up, theres no real need to change all at the same time as you cant rotate the tires anyway. as long as there is decent tire thread, i would use them a bit more.

of course if your rears are almost worn, then yes you will have reduced grip and this MAY result in possible oversteer. but again, it very much depends how you drive, and what kind of tires you ahve.

out of interest, what model car do you have?

Re: Front and rear same better?

Very useful discussion. I'm currently driving a 330. Not enough power to induce wheelspin for sure but the handling is great on the current setup.

Re: Front and rear same better?

There u go...
Ask urself wot u r after. We can't hv everything in life so u need to prioritize and set out from there. gd luck

Re: Front and rear same better?

330i? nice. i would have thought you could definitely get wheelspin though - just need to turn off your traction control..... and brake torque it a little if necessary.
