Re: First Drive: 2012 BMW 528i Four-Cylinder
Test drove 528i over the weekend at PML Alexandra. According to SE, car was loaned to journalists for past few days for review/write up.
In my opinion, N20 is a very different beast from N52 or even N55. As predicted, low end torque is very acceptable (almost linear and lag free in term of power delivery) but run out of juices quite quickly beyond 4500/5000rpm. Therefore it is excellent for normal city driving but could be a pain during hard driving eg. track days. IMHO sweetness of IL6 is completely gone which is sad. While car is idling at traffic junction, “diesel-like-clattering” is more apparent than say N55, I was told that this is due to direct injection technology
Anyway upon popping up the bonnet, here is the major turn off. Engine is so weenie tiny that I reckon it is possible to piggyback 2x N20 in tandem for 480hp!! (BMW should make the plastic engine cover thingy to be much bigger to prevent unnecessary embarrassment)
