First car? Advice Needed.

Hi All,
I'm in the market for a "new" car.

Have been doing some research, and i would like the input of Singaporean BMW Owners about the cars that they may own.

Some basic functions that i need in the future car i buy, would be:
a) Xenon Headlights.
b) RWD/4WD.
c) 200bhp and above. (0-100 below 9 s)
d) I-Drive is a real plus.
e) Prefer the inline 6/V6 engines due to their refinement.

Here are the cars that i'm considering, and my opinions of them. I would appreciate the input from fellow BMWsg members about anything under the sun. Though preferably comments like: Which car would you go for? Why? Feedback on Maintenance Costs? Fuel Consumption? Reliability?

Many Thanks in Advance! :whythis:

1) 07/08 323i, 06/07 325i, 05/06 330i.
The BMW 3 Series is in the top of my range, as i basically feel that it meets all my needs, As noted, the models above, are what fits within my price range. I don't really NEED the warranty, but it helps of course. Being the car-fanatic that i am, im leaning towards the 330, due to its hefty amount of power. The 325, its a fair compromise, as there are some 07 models that i could get with warranty that would see me good for another one/two years. Performance figures wise, its adequate. The 323; i'm not really interested in, as it lacks the i drive, and xenon headlights. But i would be able to get a brand new one, or get a used one and modify it. Question here is, how much more power can i get out of it? Without harming or causing unnecessary wear to the engine.

2) 03/04 E46 M3.
This car just completely satisfies the racer in me. Its everything i look for in a car. Especially the fact that the used ones i'm looking at, belong to fellow members on this forum, and they have been modified BEAUTIFULLY. Price wise, i would like to know if paying more for an older car, over say the more reliable 05/06 330i a good idea. Obviously if both were new cars, they would not even be worth comparing. But the idea of maintenance cost of the M3, especially since most would have been trashed (due to the nature of the car), and the age of the car, would see more technical issues needing to be addressed. Exactly what should i expect if i were to buy one of these gorgeous sport cars? SMG gearbox, without any warranty, this is a very expensive part to repair/replace.

3) 04/05 Z4 2.5si.
To be honest, i'm not exactly such a great fan of this car. For one its being replaced really soon, and i find it to be more of a ladies car? The only reason why i'm considering it, is cause it fits within my budget, and this is my sister's dream car. However i won't mind driving it, just that the 2 seats might be of an issue at times, and the trunk would only fit my golf bag, without its clubs in it.
Is this car worth considering at all? I drove the Z4 M in the states, and although the handling was excellent, i doubt i did get the same experience with half the displacement engine, and the car being a roadster.

4) 07/08 BMW X3.
So this is the real compromise. It has a decent amount of power, has a more than sufficient amount of space (for my sport stuff), drives really well for an SUV/SAV. Lots of ground clearance, which results in a really good driving position. The downside is that there will obviously be no track days for me in this car, also, it lacks the Xenon Headlights, and similar to the Z4, its a pretty old model, which some feel is going to get phased out soon. BTW the technology in this car is not even fit for 2004? Compare it with the 04 5 Series and you will see what i mean?

5) 08 Audi A4 1.8T, 08 Merc C200 Kompressor Advantgarde.
These are the other two cars i'm considering. Any members can compare them with the BMW 3 series?

Any advice/input will be great!
Many Thanks!
Cheers
Joel.

The E90 325s do not all come with xenons. Some also do not come with iDrive. All depends on the batch and/or how the first owner specced it. So you'll have to verify when you shop around.

Also, with the exception of the 335i, all the other 6-cyl E90s are using the magnesium block engines, which are not suitable for mods as Mg is not as strong as Al. Which explains why there is a general lack of mods available for these engines.

Another common 'complaint' for owners with the Mg engines - they do not sound as nice as the old Al engines.... but this of course is subjective!

There is only one E46 M3 that would make me consider giving up my current ride for... and it's for sale! I think it's probably the same one you're looking at...

I think you can generally get a 3.0i for the same price as a 2.5i if the 3.0i is a year older. Again, the Si cars are magnesium blocks so they do not have scope for engine mods, if it's something you envision doing. You'll want the earlier cars with Al engines (3.0i as opposed to 3.0Si) if you want to eventually mod. As for comparison with the Z4M - of course the M is at another level. Unless you intend to use it 50% or more on track, I think the regular Z4 is pretty sufficient for fun on the road.

I can fit up to a midsize golf bag in the boot (with the driver in it), but yes - only one set so there's no taking your car to the club with a buddy and his clubs.

Thanks Breyton for enlightening me on the different kinds of engine out there. I didn't even know that they were made of different materials. Kinda presumed that they were all the same, but just chipped to give out different performance figures.

In terms of reliability? which would be a better engine? The 3.0i or 3.0si? BTW the 2.5i and 2.5si are different as well right? I guess "s" would stand for the Magnesium engine? Modifying the engine is not of great importance to me, cause if i get say the 330i, i think the power is more than sufficient for Singapore roads. As i don't have any income, modification would be through my parents, and as they are part of the older gen people, i don't see them forking out the $$ on what they would interpret as "SPOILING" or "Beng-ing" my car. When i meant "modify" above, i meant chipping. Will i at least be able to get more horses out by chipping those "si" engines?

All the E90 325/330 i tested were all equipped with Xenons and I-drive, thus the ignorance. :(

Just for kicks? I see you have a Z4 3.0i yourself. Any chance you modified the engine? How much extra horses have you got?

Thanks for the very detailed reply!
cheers

You're welcome bro.

Yep, for the Z4, those with the 'Si' moniker come with the Mg engines.

If left unmodifed, both the Mg and Al engines are reliable. Since you are not intending to touch the engine, then you are better off with the Mg engines since they have higher power outputs over the Al ones of equivalent capacity. I haven't looked in detail at chipping for the Mg engines so I can't really advise you on whether there are upgrades available. If there are, you can probably get 15-20 bhp more?

And nah - I haven't touched my engine. Completely stock! The only things not stock on my car are the wheels and suspension.

Cool!
Is your avatar a pic of your rims? They look really good.

Anyone here owns an X3? Would really like some feedback on ownership. Tried to do a search? But got this reply "The following words are either very common, too long, or too short and were not included in your search : BMW X3"

Re: First car? Advice Needed.

PM Blackstealth. He has a X3, think he's selling it too. U can ask him for some feedback!
