F10's hot air from air-con

Hi all,

I have hot air coming out of the air-con vent for about 5-10 seconds when the car just started.
SE told me this is normal for a F10. But, I asked whether it happened to other BMW models, she said no.

Have anyone fix this problem with PML?

In all honesty, I would say this would be normal because the aircon compressor can take as long as up to 20secs to start cooling the air being channeled into the cabin. It is not only for BMW but every other make and model. The only time you will get cool air coming out is when your ambient temp is cool like in Europe. In Singapore, its warm and humid so you will feel about there when you first start up the car for up to a minute or so before you start feeling cooler.

Hey Bro!
I too have hot air coming out of my F10s air-con vent for a few seconds when the car is just started. I shrugged it off as normal as I face the same thing with my W221 S-class and was told by my SA at C&C that this is due to climate control which blows out some hot air initially followed by cold air. So i guess it might be the same for the F10 too.

This is normal. I see it as a design flaw. I have an '09 production E82 and I experience the same 3-5s of hot air even though I did not opt for climate control (can't stand those stupid things). The problem lies with the position of the aircon filter box and its associated pipings.

BMW engines run hot. Even when shut down, they continue to emanate heat. This heated air rises to the highest part of the bonnet where the aircon filter box sits. It heats up the air in the box and piping as well, especially if you left the aircon on recirculation mode. You won't get this hot air blast if you leave the car untouched overnight or in the carpark for 6 hours or more, but if you just stopped for lunch and gets back into the car again, be prepared for hairdryer time.

You could shut all of your air vents till the compressor makes the air cool then open it again when you start.

Or you could park your car in a nice cool area so that the to be circulated air is cool when you start the car.

Live in Singapore is like that .......warm weather.

Hi Littlered,

You mean you do not see this problem as a design flaw because you mentioned it is normal?

I am not trained in automotive engineering. From a layman's point of view, I am just comparing 2 cars say Lexus and BMW. I do not get hot air from my Lexus IS250. There must be a way to overcome this issue. I always feel there is a solution to every problem. I guess I have a demanding personality that's why. But, human beings have managed to invent or improve countless technologies...

Sorry for the bad English. What I meant to say was that there's nothing mechanically wrong with the car. It's just a design problem with where they put the aircon filter box. I guess it's where it is now for easy access during servicing (shrugs).

As for solutions, I think some heat wraps and a couple of bonnet vents would help.

Dear Bro,

it not only happens in F10. My e90 1 month old also same issue. Furthermore e90 seems to have default recirculation off. Hence everytime i start engine, i have to press recirculate within cabin "on" so that i do not smell the fumes from traffic.

I asked the same question quite a while back, it seems its some regulation in Europe that the circualation must be knowingly shut by the driver, maybe to exonerate the manufacturer should anyone get CO poisoning.
