Monday was travelling along PIE when top up engine oil notification light up. When reach office and open the bonnet, found the whole engine very oily. Call Munich and the car was towed in. Call me up later in the day and tell me the plastic oil filter housing has cracked and the coolant has mixed with the engine oil. Need to flush the hose and the contaminated parts. Worst thing is there is no spare parts and need to indent. Malaysia and PML also no stock. Tell me the plastic housing not suitable for local weather going to change to aluminium. All the new 520i will have this problem. Ask them to do a recall as this is a serious issue. Any bros ever encounter this before? Remember!!! DO NOT DRIVE THE CAR IF THE ENGINE OIL NOTIFICATION LIGHT UP. IF NOT WORST THING THE ENGINE WILL NEED TO OVERHAUL!!

only new 520 affected or across all F10s?

Re: F10 (New Model) Oil Filter Housing Cracked

But why is it getting that hot in the first place for the plastic to become brittle ?

Heard that other models are using plastic oil pans .......

Mine housing is plastic. What about yours?

Red Bean Bun is asking you which part in the pic he attached is the housing you referring to.
In the pic, Part No. 1 - Oil Filter Unit (usually called housing) is made of alum while Part No. 2 - Oil Filter Cover is made of plastic

Sorry must check with technician. Never see the actual thing

Re: F10 (New Model) Oil Filter Housing Cracked

Even if 1 or 2 crack open, still it should not get contaminated with the coolent.

Isn't oil temperature regulated? Like whether if you are driving at 10 deg c or 30 deg c, your coolant and oil temp should be more or less there. It is just the fan and pump working harder, no?

Re: F10 (New Model) Oil Filter Housing Cracked

Same thing happened to me this week on my 2012 X1. My factory warranty expired 4 WEEKS prior and I had paid for a health check days before this ended which came out clear. Calgary BMW here in Canada wanted to charge me $2,200 for the repair!!! I insisted that if it was a faulty "cheap plastic part that is no longer used" that they should complete the repair for free, especially considering I have always had my car serviced there and was only 4 weeks out of warranty. Their response? $1,005 to do the repair which was the same quote from 3 independent BMW certified mechanics in town. only reason I didn't get it done elsewhere is because I didn't want to pay for another tow across town. They need to do a RECALL on this part if it is "cheap plastic" which is now substituted with aluminum. Poor customer relations and in a time with a poor economy in Canada...I will be thinking twice before purchasing my next luxury vehicle...perhaps one that doesn't cost 50k and is made with cheap plastic parts that crack for no apparent reason.

My one happend this issue this morning. The screen display showed enginer oil level low. Go to PML workshop check show in the min level. Open see, coolant all become brown color. Louck my car still under warranty, still worry does it will damaged engine? or just water cooling system.
