F10 front wheel well insulation

Just sharing with fellow F10 owners who wish for less road noise emitting from the front tyres.

Coming from e60 (225/55 r16 Pirelli P7 runflat), I always felt my f10 (225/55 r17 Primacy 4ST non-rft) is noiser most noticeable when going through rough patches on highway. Researching on sound damping the front wheel, the most positive feedback is mass loaded vinyl (MLV) decoupled with closed cell foam (CCF).

Most local workshop offered sound deadening and CCF, the best with STP products. However I managed to track down a workshop using Second Skin Luxuary Pro MLV infused with CCF and decided to give it a go. All their prices are similar.

The whole process took about 9hrs with one man on each front wheel well. I have been driving for 2 days since. Before I begin my review, I will like to highlight Primacy 4ST is not as quiet as the previous 3ST. While the side walls are soft, I suspect the tread to be harder compound thus loud road noise through rough patches. Maybe the European built Primacy 4 is different.

What I found after the MLV is that the tyre drone move down the frequency slightly and can hear higher frequency noise are more muted when on normal road. Smooth asphalt remain silent. Ringing from going through strips or seam became a single damped thud. When going through rough patches, I felt the low freq roar remained but high pitch noise are muted.

Overall, I feel the selection of quiet tyres like are still the root cause of roar on rough patches. Once done that, the addition of wheel well insulation will further enhance the quietness and the feeling of more damped cabin noise floor.
