Exhaust smell coming from air con

Hi all,

I am driving a 2011 , 318i model.
I have been experiencing exhaust smoke smell coming from my aircon, every time my car is stationary behind a engine running taxi, lorry or bike.

When I told the PML advisor during servicing, he said its normal.
But I have drove other brand of cars before but never ever smelt of this.

I ask him to check if there is Any missing filter there but he said no such filter in the front.

Pls help!
Thanks.

Re: Exhaust smell coming from air con

Did u activate or switch the 'internal circulation' on?

I asked because e.g. my ride, default is at 'off'. Once I start my engine, switch on the air-conditioning, I have to switch the 'internal circulation to 'On' otherwise it is 'off' (default) and outside air will come in.

Location of button:
Steering Wheel - Bottom Left on right cluster
Central Console - Should be next to aircon switch I think (unsure location for different model)

can try changing your aircon filter.
its located below item 19 in the diagram.
don't waste time with the advisor, just get a reliable workshop to do better.

Thanks, if I change the filter will it void the warranty?
How much will such a filter cost?

Less than $30. This is a simple DIY. I change mine every year.

In that case, as other members highlighted, probably filter dirty

Re: Exhaust smell coming from air con

I do remember reading somewhere inside this forum. Someone did mention before, our car aircon will auto open the ventilation every 30min for about 30sec even the circulation is close.

I think I read about this so call "safety feature" also..... So if you are stuck in a traffic jam for more than 30 mins, don't be surprised if you start to smell some exhaust fumes.

Re: Exhaust smell coming from air con

The recirculation button has 3 modes - on, off and auto.

Only the On mode will close the fresh air flap - this is where the exhaust smell is coming from.

Auto will close but open occasionally via a sensor looking for toxic gases. Exhaust gas to BMW is not toxic enough.

It goes to auto by default when you start the car unless it gets coded ...... Else stuff cotton into the vents like Aaron's DIY.

The filter does not stop the exhaust smell from getting into the car - new or old. It will smell like socks if you don't change it.

Thank you all Guys.
Will try it out.
I will update you all on the results soon.

(By the way... How do we select Auto or off for the recirculating button?)
