Eroded wire coating..

Dear all,

Came across this when I got my headlights changed. The mechanic noticed that all the wirings have had their rubber costing eroded. They basically came off with a light tap of the screwdriver. All of them. So live wires are almost touching.

They merely taped it with electric tapes but the best they could reached were a couple of inches. I highly suspect the rest of the wires hidden within could have the same problem.

My biggest concern, IS THIS A DEADLY DANGER and ACCIDENT WAITING TO HAPPEN??? Should PML be aware and responsible for this? (I owned many >3 yr olds before but none have this sign leh)

This seems to be common problem. I had an e60 530i with bi-xenon headlights... one fine day the parking light went kaput thru idrive fault message. an attempt to replace the bulb was disastrous with all wirings flaking off like butter bisuits. I lived with one angel eye like jack the one eyed night pirate for a couple of months before scrapping the car to export.

the only way to fix this is either you take out the whole light assembly and re sleeve the wires one by one or replace the whole light unit.

i can't believe BMW spec the wire coating requirement so loosely for heat resistance etc.. not sure what is the model of your ride (Halogen or Xenon) ... this seems to be common problem if one keep the car above 3 years. !? or those with hotter engine bay will be more prone?

Re: Eroded wire coating..

guess its the hi-temp thats eroding it.
u guys can either feedback to PML and see if they wanna do anything abt it.
If not, besides the masking tape, its advisable that u guys use the thick bigger tapes, not the normally black tapes. safety 1st ah!!
