Engines without Throttle Valves - Toyota joins BMW

BMW had a great time with valvetronic, with incredible metrics.

Now Toyota joins the fray:

Toyota reveals Valvematic technology

Valvematic:

Toyota has something new up it’s sleeves - Valvematic, an evolution of the VVT-i mechanism which now incorporates continuous valve lift control together with VVT-i’s existing valve timing control. Valvematic also eliminates the need for a throttle valve, instead controlling the volume of intake air using valve lift instead.

Re: Engines without Throttle Valves - Toyota joins BMW

BMW has been the pioneer of most engine technology advancements. Jeppo, as usual, copy and copy...

Re: Engines without Throttle Valves - Toyota joins BMW

Expected lah.......Japs are pioneers of copying hahahaha

But they can really copy it and turn it into perfection later. Look at how quiet the Lexus engines are...

Hey, you are also a Yamaha Biker? *Sorry for the OT*

Re: Engines without Throttle Valves - Toyota joins BMW

Like they say...."relentless pursuit of perfection" by lexus..... yeahh just got myself an Yamaha X1-R 135 (cub) after selling away my E30 last 2 week. Just need something to commute...tot of getting class 2 bike but its just not worthy rite now unless my pockets getting deeper. Settle for CUB ehheheheh.....wasn't riding for past 7yrs, reborn biker yehaaaaa

err ... VTEC in NSX was first time variable valve timing AND lift was introduced in a production car, innit? What's all this teutonic cock sucking?

Re: Engines without Throttle Valves - Toyota joins BMW

Correction cayman,
FIAT was the first auto manufacturer to patent a functional variable valve timing system which included variable lift. Developed by Giovanni Torazza in the late 1960's, the system used hydraulic pressure to vary the fulcrum of the cam followers (US Patent 3,641,988).

Re: Engines without Throttle Valves - Toyota joins BMW

ersalle, haha ... wiki gives us all room for dispute, however, reading the wiki and other sources carefully, I can justify my claim partly.

My rhetorical question was:

VTEC in NSX was first time variable valve timing AND lift was introduced in a production car, innit?

Points:
1) Keyword is `with lift' and `first production car'. Patents do not need implementation in the production car. They do need a prototype engine.
2) The alfa did not have LIFT. The Nissan did not have lift. Even Porsche did not have LIFT until their Variocam Plus. BMW did not have LIFT until 2001 Valvetronic.
3) Correction: NSX is only accurate for the USA. For global, suposed to be the 1989 integra.
4) Honda is considered to be the pioneer. They are the first cam switching system, and without the cam switching system in the past, lift was difficult to control.

Overall, nit picking aside, we all know that the success of implementation of VVT technology and bullshit lawyers aside, was Honda. C'mon.

Waa! Used to be 110cc, now X1R 135cc liao huh? Must be very power for a small bike! Feel like buying one for commuting too... given that now petrol is still rocket-high priced. Me hasn't been riding for 15 years. Like you, I was re-born too. CHEERS!

Re: Engines without Throttle Valves - Toyota joins BMW

Very very chim for me laio... A little history by both of you really enhances my knowledge, man... Of coz, in any case, we still must give some credit to the japanese guys.

Re: Engines without Throttle Valves - Toyota joins BMW

Yes i do agree with that CaySman, no doubt i don't see any variable valve timing blablabla cars before the 90's.
Of course u gotta give credits to the japs MUMU, they sell their products cheaper and reliable .....whose benefiting? We are hehehe
But for this thread, the existing VVTI's engine in the toyota's are already very fuel efficient, only lacks punch though in my opinion. This throttleless valve system is proven in BMW's cause i myself drove the e46 318i valvetronic on full tank with total distance of 680km without refilling.

Re: Engines without Throttle Valves - Toyota joins BMW

yes Valvetronic chiefly eliminates `pumping losses' during times where the throttle is not fully opened (yeah, that's almost all the time) and I think is really effective in the real world.

680km!!?? :yikess: That's helluv distance, man...

The Toyota's VVT engines flat out torque at a lower 4000rpm, isn't that better than reving to higher rpm for the same amount of torque achieved?

The Korean products are also cheap and good now. At least, it is much better now compared to 10-20 years ago... I think they are upcoming... chasing the Japanese closely.

correction, the 1st VTEC engine is the found in the Integra, not NSX:cloud9:
