Engine Oil Sensor <Inactive>

Like to seek advice about Engine Oil Sensor.
My ride is a 6-yo and for sometime, the engine sensor light has been showing now and then.
For about a week, I realise that it shows permanently.

Anyone knows what's going on? Any prior experience?

Thanks in advance!

Thanks Vansoh. But I like to go with somewhat open eyes.
Blind enquiry can lead to costly action.

Re: Engine Oil Sensor <Inactive>

If it is your EO sensor kaput then you should not be able to get any reading when you do the EO level check, is that the case?

Re: Engine Oil Sensor <Inactive>

Got 2 sensors - oil pressure, oil level ....

Oil pressure easy to replace and not too ex .... You can go pull out the connector and check if it's a bad connection. Use realoem for the diagram.

The other could be in the oil sump if I am not wrong .....

If got error code you can do some online research to find out more, go to one of the sponsor's ws for more confidence in their recommendation, if not causing driveability problem you still can go elsewhere for second/third/fourth opinion if still dubious.

Re: Engine Oil Sensor <Inactive>

Yes it is like that.
Can't see the oil level.

Thanks for your ever useful response.
I think it is the oil sump. Will go ES get the part then go WS.

Re: Engine Oil Sensor <Inactive>

I went online to research, but did not understand as much.
RBB has enlightened, went to ebay, found the part number, and will go realoem to find the part.

Yeah! I should be able to get it resolved this weekend.

Thanks anyway!!

Re: Engine Oil Sensor <Inactive>

If you are confident about your diagnosis of the problem then go ahead an purchase the part. But if sensor is not the root cause then you have wasted your money. Unless you really beleive your ws going to carrot you on the parts, it might be safer to hear them out before buying the part. Just my 2 cents worth.

Re: Engine Oil Sensor <Inactive>

The oil sensor around $100, if previously your EO level is yo-yoing, just buy the part to change it.

Do note you have to change EO too, need to drain all out to get at the sensor.

Re: Engine Oil Sensor <Inactive>

If need to open oil sump might as well change the gasket there ...... give it a scan just to reduce the risk of wrong diagnosis ......

Re: Engine Oil Sensor <Inactive>

Well, what i usually do is to buy and ask WS to change.
At the same time, ask them to check for other possible causes.
I am accustom to changing new parts along with time.

I think at least 50% of my car parts (excluding chassis) are probably new or less than 1 year old.

I am someone who even changes oil filter in-between oil change.
I like maintaining my car well, except polishing.
The aesthetic is less important than performance.

Re: Engine Oil Sensor <Inactive>

I am wondering, so far, no one had the same problem?

Re: Engine Oil Sensor <Inactive>

I got the oil pressure sensor issue ......... had it replaced but still showed up. In the end it was the connector issue.

When disconnected it would not prompt the fault on my dash. But once connected fault appears.

I did not have an issue with the oil level sensor though.

Re: Engine Oil Sensor <Inactive>

To some extent, the "i" stands for "irritating", not "injection", not "intelligent".

Re: Engine Oil Sensor <Inactive>

My '06 320i oil level used to prompt top-up 1L intermittently. This was last month immediately after EO change. Went back ws top-up, ok for a day, then same prompt again. Since it was intermittent, I didn't bother but kept monitoring. Now no more top-up prompt but oil level indicator fluctuates from 1/4, half & 3/4 during checks - car driven and was checked while stationary on level ground. Guess I'll need to replace the oil level sensor during the next oil service.
