Engine Oil levels

I just took delivery of a 3 year old 320i last week, car as done just a hair under 34,000kms. Prior to pickup, I asked the dealer to send my car to PML for a checkup as the warranty is still valid for a few days. At a cost of $120, PML gave it a clean bill of health, except for a slightly leaking rocker cover gasket, which was replaced under warranty.

On Saturday, as I was driving to have my car tinted by our good friend Sherman at Infratint, I noticed the oil level warning signal. Ran the check, and I was supposed to top up 1L. Instead of doing that, I decided to pick up 5quarts of Redline 5w-30 and headed down to BVO to have the engine oil/oil filter replaced.

Oil replaced, warning gone, it's all good, but I'm a little concerned about oil levels - with a fresh change of oil, the oil levels are still sitting on the MIN mark. Should I top up more? To which mark? Owner's manual says engine capacity is 4.2L, BVO has put about 4.5 quarts in, this should equate to about 4.2L, but oil level indicator reads MIN (reading taken while cruising on the highway).

To be honest, I'm a little concerned after reading so many seemingly horror stories of forum members' 320s with oil consumption/leakage issues. My last car was a 2007 Subaru WRX STi, seen it's fair share of track days and I've never had a problem with oil consumption/leakages. As my warranty runs out in exactly 5 days, I'm quite concerned about the potential issues I might face, especially with the costly nature of BMW parts.

Any tips/hints as to what I should do? This is my first BMW, so I'm a little clueless, as I've been driving only Japanese 4cyl turbo cars for the past 8 years.

Thanks in advance folks!

Re: Engine Oil levels

Update:

Seems like after a day, oil levels are indicating MAX now :)

Re: Engine Oil levels

hi,

just a thought... since you have 4 days warranty left, maybe you would want to drive it a little bit harder to counter check if the oil level drops again??

I actually have an appointment with Kampong Arang service centre tomorrow, see if I can nitpick my way to freebies! :)

Re: Engine Oil levels

Hi Bro,

I was advised by my SA at PML to check the oil level in the morning after you drive for say 15mins and when the car is stopped. This should give you an accurate reading. I was also told that our oil level gauge is a thermal/electric device that measures the time taken to warm the oil up (i.e. translating into amount of oil in the lub system). The oil level device does not measure the phisical level of the oil. Hope this helps.
