hi all, need some advise from fellow n54 owner.

is 5w50 too thick for our engine?
what are the correct oil to use for n54?

As I used to run 5w50 on my previous car, i have a few bottles of oil left. wondering if i can pour them in n54 engine.

Thanks all!

I use 5W40 on my N54 :)

Think the manual says 30 weighted oil but i need to double check

Re: Engine oil for n54?

manual state 30w oil. I had used both 30w and 40w before. Personally, prefer the 30w

Re: Engine oil for n54?

Yup I understand it's thicker, will it harm or affect the engine in anyway?
Anybody running 5w50 oil here?

Re: Engine oil for n54?

There is not much benefit running a thicker than recommended engine oil, unless you have a high mileage engine.

A few downsides to using thicker than needed lubes:

1. Worse FC and sometimes loss of power as the engine needs to pump the thicker lube around
2. Less cold start protection
3. In some cases, you may see increased operating temps

Here's an analogy: It takes little energy to stir water with a spoon. However, significantly more energy is required to stir honey with that same spoon. U get the drift :)
