Engine Auto Start/Stop

My F10 had this function called "Engine Auto Start/Stop". While it claims that its function is to "save" fuel, I suspect the frequent starts and stops of engine at traffic lights may actually cause "wear and tear" to the engine, not to mention to the battery.

Any experienced bros/sis could enlighten on this? Many thanks.
