Engaging Reverse while driving

Yesterday was doing some spirited driving in Steptronic Mode and after slowing down, I put it back in D mode and drove as per normal. While slowing down, I have the habit of downshifting in steptronic mode, so I kept thinking I was still in Steptronic mode so I pushed twice to N then to R while my car was still in forward motion. I quickly pulled back down the knob back to D. Haha My eyes was on the instrument cluster so the display was fixed at D at all times and did not display N or R when I shifted out of D. I was worried I would destroy my transmission but alas, the engineers at BMW had designed it to remain in D while the veh was in motion. hahaha Lucky me.....

I was out yesterday doing some "rounding" with a couple of my friends on my E-90. As my friends pick up speed on their ride, I was too eager to drop gear that I thought I was in steptronic mode, when I mistakenly push the gear up, and saw "P" on the instrument cluster!!!

However I quickly change back to "D", and although I was changing the gear lever to "P", nothing happens??? I am wondering why???

Re: Engaging Reverse while driving

Had the same scare two days back. Was driving up Benjamin Sheares bridge from Beach Rd turn into ECP. Thinking I was still in steptronic mode, I down shifted and it went into R.
But strangely or fortunately ntg happened. Quckly shifted it back to D. and drove on.
Are u guys using the M5 gear shift as well as I think this wont happen to the stock gear shift as it has a catch release button.

Re: Engaging Reverse while driving

My SE told me before that our Bimmers have a safety feature - if we're moving forward beyond a certain speed, nothing will happen if we accidentally shift to R or press P (in the case of the new electronic gearshift).

Re: Engaging Reverse while driving

This safety feature would be pretty easy to implement both digitally and mechanically. So I guess its safe to assume that most cars have this as a standard feature.

Re: Engaging Reverse while driving

Well, I know from first hand experience that a Kia Rio doesn't have this safety feature. :yummie:
But it's good to know I won't encounter this in my current ride. :)

Yes I am using the M5 gear shift. So nothing will happen right? Cause mine went to "P"!
