I know this has been discussed in a few old threads, but does anybody have a conclusion yet?

Is the new "D" suffix referring to direct injection? Do we really have it? Does it really produce 170bhp, or is PML smoking us? :furious:

Any bros here have done a dyno on a stock pre-LCI and LCI? What's the differences?

Re: E90 LCI 2011 with N46B20BD 170bhp?

I have only heard of the N45B20S that produces 175 bhp for the 320si. Never heard of the N46B20BD. Is it new?

Re: E90 LCI 2011 with N46B20BD 170bhp?

From what I know the LCI cars *should* get a new engine that features direct injection:
BMW 3 Series Sedan : Four-cylinder petrol engine (318i, 320i)

And according to the tech specs in the showroom it's 170bhp...

Well my LCI engine code says N46B20BD and non-LCI says N46B20BA... so are the engines different or what?

Re: E90 LCI 2011 with N46B20BD 170bhp?

direct injection 320i with 170bhp (N43) long time liao leh
it's PI 320i (check with pbear) because the engine is meant for Europe only but not PML car

The English Wikipedia does not state this, but the German one does?

It seems like the engine with direct injection is N43, not the N46. The PML specs are indeed misleading:

From what I read, 170 bhp is for N46NB20. What we get from PML is N46B20. It is different. Furthermore, our N46B20 produces 156 bhp, which is not published in the German website.

Anyway, the picture of the engine in the PML site looks exactly like mine.

Re: E90 LCI 2011 with N46B20BD 170bhp?

I found this thread, also in German:
Unterschied 320i (N43) und 320i (N46N) : BMW 3er E90, E91, E92 & E93

Translated and extracted with the help of Google again, I'm not going to paste the whole thing here of course.

The N43 has Direct Injection but no Variable Valve Timing
The N46N does not have Direct Injection but has Variable Valve Timing

Quote:
"Since lean DI engines can be driven but dethrottled often (to ECE cycle, for example, be driven wholly lean operation, therefore, the new BMW four-cylinder so low standard consumption), not the potential of a variable valve lift is so great."

So that clears the doubt of Direct Injection.

Next question is, does the N46N (or B20BD according to my engine code) produce 156 or 170hp?

The new engine has been out for ages (since 2007?) why are they brining in the OLD one???

Just ordered a E90 LCI... if this is the case I'll be damn sad.

Re: E90 LCI 2011 with N46B20BD 170bhp?

OK I dunno if I was dreaming or being cock eye. I went back to PML today to settle payment and saw the spec... 156bhp.

I guess PML just want to bring in the same engine to reduce maintenance and stocking costs.

N46 it shall be :( Time to mod the ECU

One of my biggest regrets in terms of mods was doing the remapped on the ecu on my e90 320 LCI. IMHO, the ecu remapped is worth doing on a 318, and not on a 320. Spent around 1.3k to get an increase of less than 15 bhp plus the risk of getting caught by PML which will void the warranty is not worth doing. Again, this is just my opinion ya. Others might disagree.

Re: E90 LCI 2011 with N46B20BD 170bhp?

Yes, I am with you. I am still thinking about the ECU remap because the gains are minimal for the price. AFAIK, our E90s have 4 different maps. I wonder how the ECU remaps affect ALL the maps, not just one. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I have two 320i - one is pre-LCI and the LCI one is coming. I may consider modding the pre-LCI since it is out of warranty.

For the same price, I'd rather buy the BMW Performance Exhaust so I feel my backside vibrate... very shiok when driving.

Hi guys

Need your advise - been thinking of remapping my ECU for the said price after my warranty expires. But after reading this, im thinking if there's Any other options instead..

Any advise?what else can I do that is worth it?

Thank you

Re: E90 LCI 2011 with N46B20BD 170bhp?

Unless turbo engines, ECU remap, exhaust, intake, race cams give minimal power or torque increases for the money. If want significant and lasting (i.e. not just butt feel that disappear after a few months and all it is left is noise) power and torque gains, try spending a bit more and go for aftermarket turbo or super charging.

I wish LTA reduces the diesel road tax soon, the 320d out run the 320i any time, and the 335d can give the M3 a good run.

Increase in power is felt only at high engine rpm band, i.e. it mainly affects top speed, while increase in torque would result in quicker acceleration. However, a significant increase (>15%) is required to make a real difference (other than noise), as there are other factors like total weight of the car, wheel weight, tyre grip and pressure, gearbox type, etc that affect the overall acceleration.

For me, just enjoy the BMW 50/50 weight balance and RWD setup in handling and cornering (use 3rd gear, 4,000-5,000 rpm band), you might just find that out-cornering a 4WD WRX is not that difficult. Straight line sprint does not require much driver involvement apart from the right foot.

Hmm... chances upon this thread as I was doing a search.
Just wondering, if PML marketed as 170hp but sold product is 156hp, is it a form of cheating?
