E90 engine mount bolt broken

Hi guys,

Yesterday I was going WOT on my '06 E90 325i (mileage 61K) until I came to a stop at the traffic lights. All of a sudden, the engine went vibrating like mad. I could feel it on the dashboard, steering and even the whole cabin. My guess was the engine mounts gave way. So I called up Chris (Boss motorsports), he told me to drop the car for his guys to inspect this morning.

John hoisted up the car, removed the bottom plate and to our astonishment, one broken bolt sheared in half dropped out. So now the car is immobilized for at least 5 days.

Now I read thru E90 forums and bimmerfest and I realised it's a common problem with the Z4s and M3s.

Just wish to check does anyone here encounter this problem before? I mean I have never encounter such problems in all my ex rides.

If it's too powerful then I think the engineers did not do a good job in factoring the risk of broken bolts. Initially I thought it might be due to the engine mounts giving way thus causing vibrations and breaking the bolts but no! John told me the engine mounts are fine however I did not want to take the risk and replaced all of them including the one for the gearbox.

By the way when I was at Boss yesterday, I discovered the bolts were Aluminum alloys!

Re: E90 engine mount bolt broken

Its all for weight reduction..thats why BMW employs plastics for all the pipings and joints and O-rings for joint sealants thats doesnt last in our environment and its common for BMW to have oil/water leaks after 3 years.. They are even studying to use composites to replace the suspension parts that is now made fom Aluminium.

Talk to BMW Asia they should be able to look into this. This is a critical failure if your car is stock.
