E90 323i vs. 325i

Hi Guys,

The 2 cars are separated by 20K. Same engine, vastly different bhp.

Any other differences? Has anyone know how to unlock the additional horses from the 323i?

Regards,
Eric Lee

iirc the 323 is still an inline4 while the 325 is a V6?

:)

If I Recall Correctly..

Re: E90 323i vs. 325i

as i recall, the 325 has a 2 stage air intake manifold, the 323 has only a single stage. So its not just ECU program difference.

if you drive them, u'll notice the 323 punctures at after 4,500 - 5,000 rpm... but the 325 just keeps going like an energizer rabbit....

i was told the 325 engine runs at higher compression so material composition of certain parts of the engine could be different too...

while i'm no expert, take both out for a drive and u'll see the difference at around those rpm i mention earlier...

Re: E90 323i vs. 325i

325 & 323 are both 2.5L in-line 6
335 had iDrive, 323 don't. Idrive alone close 14K to retro-fit.
check the seat spec. 325 seat should be different.
My colleague in Beijing just got it, it had air inflat support to adjust fitment.

Re: E90 323i vs. 325i

I think the 323i (Highline) version had iDrive. Stated in PML website, it had Navigation System Professional, same as 325i. but a 323i only don't.

i stand corrected! shld've checked before posting. :)

tt's why i love this place.

Re: E90 323i vs. 325i

The bhp ratings for BMW's seem very low but 1-100km/h seems ok.

323i has 177bhp - 2.5L in-line 6 @ 8.8 sec
325i has 218bhp - 2.5L in-line 6 @ 7.7 sec

The Accord EuroR can achieve 220bhp with only 2L NA engine.

BMW building low bhp engines?

er... what point are you making here?

Orange has more Vitamin C than Apple.... but sometimes i still prefer to eat apple mah.... :)

Re: E90 323i vs. 325i

The point I am trying to make or ask is if we should really be looking at BHP figures only.

Based on my non-technical expertise evaluation, it seems that BMW engines have a very low BHP rating but pretty high torque figures which makes the 0-100km/h faster.

I know the formula.... but just seems counter intuitive that the 323i and 325i has such low BHP numbers.

Re: E90 323i vs. 325i

i had the DC5 befor my 320, it was lighter, 160hp vs the heavier 150hp bimmer but the latter was faster and more stable. so what gives? like henry said, apples are nice too haha

Ok.. if your point is, should we only look at the BHP and not other stuff.. I agree with you.... previously, the Lancer MR has 175 bhp at crank, but dynoed at wheel is about 115 or so....

but i guess when one has the abilities to choose a nicer car, a lot of other factor comes in... comfort.... safety.... style.... status... many other reasons.

But i still don't understand your point on 323 or 325 giving lower bhp then an Euro R... what exactly is your point leh? *scratching my head*

Re: E90 323i vs. 325i

My point with the EuroR comparison is to understand why BMW's produces low BHP engines. The EuroR is just to draw in a benchmark of a lower cc engine achieving higher BHP output.

The answer maybe because it was dynoed at the wheels vs engine, etc which could be one of the answers... (does anybody know)?

It's a technical question on just the engine block and I am leaving preference out of the equation (the apple, banana, melon, strawberry preference). Also, leaving power to weight ratio out of the equation (like the Lotus uses a 1.8L Toyota engine and is also super fast).

Hope this clarifies what I was trying to understand about the 323i vs. the 325i.

So, any technical experts around that can help?

Re: E90 323i vs. 325i

mrericlee,

yeah probably a difference in where the dyno was measured from, also i think bigger engines but lower hp may also have to do with complying to emission requirements...

if you had to choose between the 2, and the additional 20k is not a big consideration... go with the 325...

i have a 323 and i'm doing like 6.x km/litre on an average (~55 litres for 400km) i do mostly city driving, i hear some of the guys with 325 are getting like 8.x / 9.x km/litre... i can only think the engine is a newer model and more refined with better fuel efficiency, or doesn't work as hard off the line since its not detuned.

well both are attracting a 2.5 litre roadtax and insurance... the additional 20k difference buys you a idrive + gps (worth ~9k) and ~40hp more. well worth it... (something i learn on hind sight)

if you want best bang for the buck, a lotus with the 1.8 litre toyota engine or evo or wrx might be worth considering....

whatever your choice, do keep us up to date about it!

Re: E90 323i vs. 325i

325i is the one to go for, but the 323i is still the minimum for joining the 6-pot club! I am a bit surprised by the FC, though on my 520i I only get abt 7.7km/l in city, and 10.7km/l from KL to Tuas on the NS H/way

Re: E90 323i vs. 325i

Thanks for the reply guys... looks like it's pretty common consensus that the additional 20k is worth it....

More BHP & torque, better consumption, iDrive, GPS for 20k more but same road tax sounds pretty good.

Appreciate the discussion. This forum is definitely cool.
