E90 323i consumes engine oil?

My check engine light came on on my 8 mth old car 2 days ago. Spent 15 minutes trying to look for the dipstick then realised there ain't none:lol2: heh heh.....then spent another 15 minutes finding out how to check using the BC. BC shows that I shud top up 1 litre of engine oil so I used the one bottle provided in the package that came with the car.
Is this normal? I find it strange that 1 whole litre of engine oil is consumed after jus 8 mths. Funny thing is after pouring in the whole 1 litre bottle, waiting for half an hour then checking, the electronic gauge shows 3/4 reading *scratch head*
Wud like to hear your views before I call up PML. Thanks!

Wa, J ,u sure are a DIY kind of person ar, even actually lifting the bonnet and check/top up oil LOL. Hats off to you.

Didnt know you stil keeping the prelude; interested in a NS run up north and tracking it?? :)

Re: E90 323i consumes engine oil?

Yes, I was told when they delivered my car that the car will need a top up and that is based on mileage and not age. So I assume about midway between the 25000 service recommendation, you will need to do the top up. But not sure about why only reads 3/4 after you topped it up.....

Now that I am older, busier with work, have sort of "retired" from DIY-ing, spending all my time in workshops etc etc but my passion for cars still there, just that the priorities have changed :)

Yup, decided to keep the Lude, cos not worth selling it after I renewed the COE. It is still a nice car to drive. Run up north and tracking it? Anytime man, just let me know. But I'd need to know who you are first, cos more people know me than I know them, somehow....Your nick's familiar but I cannot place your countenance to it.
I did a high speed run on NS Highway before I let go my EK4. Hit 230kmh @ 8000rpm (as captured on DSM)....I let go my car as it is with the mods so whoever is the next owner is damn lucky as it was still in excellent condition (only 147000km). Was also caught by MTP for speeding! hur hur....refused to bribe them nor give them my license (I forgot to bring). And they just let me go, saying that they will send the summons to me *scratch head" I wonder how...

My mileage is only about 6000km now....and it has consumed at least 1 litre of engine oil.....scary man:confused:

Re: E90 323i consumes engine oil?

You should try changing to a different grade of engine oil. I used to have this problem too.
Try OWS Racing oil, no more topping up ever since..

U had a DSM ECU on your EK4?? Phew, :yikess:

Hmm...irrelevent question. Isnt a 323iA kinda mild? Seems like a STI or IX320(of cos can still be easily modded further up from stock) should be more your cup or tea, no? Finally dawns on me why 240bhp cars didnt interest you one little bit at all :)

Yup, I was agonising whether to get a Evo 9 GSR or 323iA....but I am at a stage where I do not want to drive so fast on the roads anymore. In fact I spend more time driving the Jag now cos the BM still gives me that cheonging feeling but it jus ain't fast enuf (compared to my EK). The Lude sits at home like a sculpture now, mebbe I shud convert it to a OPC:yummie:

Hmmm..AP#% sure pays well nowdays..3 cars to support (not withstanding the Prelude 2.3 road tax at 100+10more/year!! :)

Well. A lot of us drive like a bat out of hell in our young days; most will mature and slow down. But the cheong streak in us will always be simmering somewhere within, and surface once in a while to play the devil :)

Haha.Teased you enough. Shant disturb your peace anymore. Do enjoy your driving(not commuting ok), and 1 day when i see you on the roads, we can have an impromptu race. :nehnehhh:

Cheers

Re: E90 323i consumes engine oil?

Hi,

I had my oil changed once at 3000 km to Mobil 0W40, the level shown in the screen then was about 3/5 full (it wasn't completely filled). A couple of months later at aproximately 8000km, I had the same notice and I topped up with 1 litre of engine oil.

Somewhat similiar to what you've experienced. :)

Re: E90 323i consumes engine oil?

I had mine topped up at 10k, oil changed at 20k, recently topped up at 30k. Quite consistent it seems. How the engine oil consumed very much depends on your driving pattern. The harder you drive, the faster the engine oil will consume.

Re: E90 323i consumes engine oil?

Hi...i got the same problem top-up once on 6k next 9k than 13k ...i went back to PML and turn the whole place to HELL...they did a oil change service for me..monitoring it now still ok,no problem yet...they tell me alot of story about why and what happen...I told them i am not paying for topping-up of engine oil, cause that is PML problem..

Topping engine oil every 3-4k doesn't seem quite normal. I know of a guy who got his whole engine changed because he has to top up too frequently, like 1 litre for every 700km. He is driving a E60:523 though. Btw, it is the problem of BMW, not PML though.

Re: E90 323i consumes engine oil?

Is BMW cars are build to this two mode 1) drive hard higher engine oil top-up and 2)slow drive less top-up engine oil...this is real bull shitting...thats why i told them i will not pay a single in engine oil top up..i told them to cliam it from BMW germany and not from my pocket. as long as is empty i drive back without paying a single cent cause this is not my problem...blame the engine designer...

Re: E90 323i consumes engine oil?

Even if I drive the car hard, the engine shudn't be burning off engine oil, right? unless the piston rings are not tight or some other problem. My Honda Civic and Prelude has never seen the need to top up engine oil throughout the oil's 10000km life despite high rpm driving. As usual PML told me "it's like that one". I still monitoring the situation........

Re: E90 323i consumes engine oil?

hi guys! i had my top up after about 18k mileage clocked.

i think it is a normal phenomenon if we are using 0W grade synthetic engine oil as PML also advised me to top up when i 1st took the keys from them

The recommended Castrol synthetic engine oil is at 0W grade, this is a very thin based engine oil and easily 'runs' off ' by filing in all gaps within the engine. This symptom tends to be more severe when the engine is still new as there are plenty of 'unfilled' gaps eating away all your 0W grade engine oil

However, if the sensor keeps prompting you to top up, something may have gone wrong and better send it back to PML to do a thorough check.I topped up mine at about 18K mileage and subsequently replaced the whole tank with fresh ones when it reached the 25K routine oil changed

My mileage is about 31K now and so far so good and no further top ups are required

Re: E90 323i consumes engine oil?

I have a N52B25 engine here too.

I was told by PML that the factory did not fill the engine oil to the max for transportation purposes and that's why our brand new car came with 1 litre bottle of engine oil to be topped up by ourselves "after a while". :whythis:

My other cars never had this problem.

when collecting car i was told that engine oil require topping up, not only for 1st 10,000km or so; but continually at around 10,000 km intervals
