E60 Steering Wheel DIY

Hey guys just wanted to share with all what I did during the morning, my volume buttons were getting unresponsive the past few months and i finally could not put up with it anymore. Feeling inspired (and a tad cheapo) I decided to try cleaning the contacts instead of shelling out for new buttons/contacts.

Step 1 is to disconnect the airbag

A bit hard to see but basically theres a small hole at the bottom of the back of the steering wheel, I used a torx screwdriver pushed into it and felt around for a springy resistance, push HARD and the airbag should just come off easily.

Items needed for the job

This is where the CRC contact cleaner comes into play see the 3 pin conectors at the back and the gold contacts on the rubber ? Spray liberally to clean the contacts. As for the Gold connectors on the PCB I sprayed the contact cleaner on a piece of cloth and wiped clean. Allow everything to dry for approx 2-3 mins before reassembling the whole setup tada you're done !!

Hi bro , by removing the air bag without disconnect the battery terminal cable will it trigger the airbag fault sensor or not ? Thx

Re: E60 Steering Wheel DIY

The technical correct method is to disconnect the negative battery cable before you remove the airbag.

I have seen with my own eyes WS removing the airbag directly without doing the above.

Do note that some guys in the US have reported their airbag deploying in front of their face whilst dismantling it before taking the above precaution. You have to decide if it's worth the risk to take.

Nope no airbag fault, by right you should remove the battery terminal cable and place the airbag away from your work area. Yep seen quite a few workshops skip that step tho.
