That looks like a sedan boot to me. It's probably a sedan with dual exhausts. Looking at the font's and colour of the meter cluster, you can pretty much conclude that it's a sedan too.

Seen this before.
It's a remus dual outlet exhaust system made specially ONLY for the E46 318. (only one pipe into the muffler from the mid box)
The muffler box has two outlet. One as per normal, and a secondary outlet at the side.
It routes across the rear of the spare tire tank and out to the other side.
Can get it from Fong Kim Exhaust.
