I think the initial batch of S54s had that problem. If you check the E46fanatics archive you might come up with some instances.

Re: E46 Bmw M3 with S54 engines prone to blowing up?

U referring to the global recall on the conrod?
yeah, that affected the cars produced up to Mid 03

Re: E46 Bmw M3 with S54 engines prone to blowing up?

mainly the nov 01 builds were having engine problems - engines blowing up.

bmw did a recall for all 01 till i think early 03 to change the rod bearings...

Re: E46 Bmw M3 with S54 engines prone to blowing up?

so our M cars could theoretically blow up still?

Re: E46 Bmw M3 with S54 engines prone to blowing up?

Low possibility. But if u r talking bout Vanos failure and things like that then it can happen even on non M-cars .

How old is ur M ?

Yea man. Posted practically same time. So the forum haven't update when i was typing.

Is it making weird noises or choking? Giving you the impression that it's gonna blow? During a particular rev region?

Re: E46 Bmw M3 with S54 engines prone to blowing up?

i guess the 'straining' and 'struggling' engine sound makes him worried.. i was too.. but then, it's quite normal i guess?

did my recall last month, been running in for the first 2500km since.. shud be enuff right? engine has been running strong since..

Well i accidentally overreved it on first gear last year. Was on Sequential Mode but didn't know it, thinking i was on auto, halfed the throttle, needle when past 8000 rpm and the orange lights started blinking on the rev meter.

Car immediately de reved (if i may use this term) to normal revs. Immediately switched to "A"mode.

Looks like it is not possible to over rev in the first 2 gears, never tried the other ones yet and i don't intend to, coz u will need a lot of speed to do that.

Re: E46 Bmw M3 with S54 engines prone to blowing up?

i always thought that it was impossible to over rev.... be carefull pml sucks at service.... if u manage to blow it up somehow they will not be friendly

Re: E46 Bmw M3 with S54 engines prone to blowing up?

PML service always sucks... expensive too.... ...i changed my rear bumper after accident... it takes 15 days... hows that for customer satisfaction...

Re: E46 Bmw M3 with S54 engines prone to blowing up?

To maintain the car well, other than doin the necessary services like oil change (which M cars tend to need more often), u need to pay attention to the driving scenario as well.

The shift lights indicator is there for you to look at so be ready to change gears when they are lit up. I hv revved to the redline b4 at 8k rpm just once at 2nd gear and it's perfectly fine.
It may sound like it's straining or struggling but it's actually not. The engine is just so raw hence on the back of your mind, u might think it would blow up but it wont be that easy.

Anyway, hope to c ya at meet up SEI and Steep :)
