E46 16:9 Monitor (Question)

Hi all, was wondering if anybody out there is familiar with the compatibility of the above metioned. Ok from going thru the forum, I guess we can all conclude that all E46 be it coupe/sedan or whatever, brought in by PML(********) are uable to be retrofitted with DVD navigation. I gather that this is due to the version of OBC that is installed, or something like that, I'm not that tech savvy.

I'm interested to know, if I want to install the 16:9 inch head unit without DVD Navigation (Stupid I know but I think the screen is damn cool), can it work with the existing OBC? Also, will our OBC allow the integration of BMW bluetooth and TV as seen on Bimmernav?

Would really appreciate it if any gurus out there have the answer. Thanks in advance.

16:9 display with work without the DVD nav unit.Just no map display. For bluetooth intregration, you will need bluetooth module and harness as our car are not prep for nav and bluetooth.

Re: E46 16:9 Monitor (Question)

hi.

actually i have toyed with this idea of changing the headunit to either the 16:9 or even to the CD version (mine's the venerable cassette! version). i was told that in changing the HU, there is a need to set some parameters in the ECU somewhere to 'recognise' the new unit installed, and with that it can be used. Without doing that, the HU is actually like a dummy (cannot be 'activated').

Dats wat stopped me in my path, as i wana stay as far away fm PML as much as possible for such 'additional' stuff for reasons many bros here are fully aware...

If this is accurate information, then only PML is able to help us change HU to another BMW OEM HU? anyone knows if J4C or BVO can do, or have done, this?

Then again if wat i heard is nonsense, will appreciate some confirmation fm experienced bros here.

Re: E46 16:9 Monitor (Question)

Confirm cannot. PML ordered a complete set for me two years ago ($11,000+ less 25% during some event). Spent 3 days installing it, then realised that it does not work. Something like our OBC is "low" version. The sys requires at least a "high" version to work.

Spent another two days to convert back. Fortunately no cost to me.

Re: E46 16:9 Monitor (Question)

OK so what you're saying is that the 16:9 monitor/head unit itself won't work even if we're not considering DVD navigation. Confirm?

Re: E46 16:9 Monitor (Question)

Not for 318i series. I understand that 325 might work. Very tricky situation. Even PML technical staff not sure. They need to test it out to verify.

Re: E46 16:9 Monitor (Question)

Not necesaary. As long as you can get the harness for the 16:9 display, it will work. Apart from the display unit, you will need the radio module too.Fyi

Re: E46 16:9 Monitor (Question)

Ok, is the radio module you're talking about the same one stated in bimmernav Bimmernav.com Online Store
or is there a different module/part number for the module based on region? Like singapore needs a different one that can only be ordered thru PML?

Secondly, this harness thing is pretty interesting, coz now i'm wondering, if that means that if I get the harness for the Nav computer, the system will run? I can have DVD navigation too? Or no matter what we will never be able to do that short of changing car. Sorry I've got so many questions but I'm really interested in this. Thanks for the help guys.

Re: E46 16:9 Monitor (Question)

Thats the radio module i was referring to. Our cars are not prep for navigation and does needs the navi harness to connect to the display, dvd nav and radio module.

Re: E46 16:9 Monitor (Question)

Thanks 14m3. I'm just afraid that even after connecting the DVD comp to the 16:9 monitor with the Nav harness and monitor harness, the system still won't work because of the version of cars we have here.

Mapleleaf, when you tried installing last time, did PML install the wiring harnesses as well or did they simply plonk in the display and figure out that it didnt work?

I don't know abt the harnesses but I know PML ordered the parts over several weeks because they assessed the situation and keep finding parts not enough, so has to go back to 'drawing board' on two occasions and ordered more parts. I would suppose they have done their research carefully. The overall parts was about $9,000 and labour cost of $2,000. It was the computer "high" - "low" version problem.
