E38 Incomplete Combustion

The 4th cylinder of my E38 was found to have incomplete combustion by BMW's diagnostic software, and BMW's technician changed first the ignition coil, and then the spark plug, but the reading of 4th cylinder was still not zeroed. He then cleaned the contacts of wire harness with WD40, and it still did not solved the problem.

This is a strange problem...and it causes the engine to vibrate occasionally, with a loss in accelerating power. I also noticed that this happens, thrice, after heavy rains.

Has anyone of you had this problem? The BMW technician is still unable to pin point what causes it, and I have to drive in fear of sudden stalling of the engine, as it has happend once.

Re: E38 Incomplete Combustion

Since the ignition system had been checked OK, may be he shall go further to:

1. Vaccum leaking (manifold gasket)
2. The fuel system, injector
3. Pressure test the particular port if serious valvetrain worn up.

Hope these may help.

Re: E38 Incomplete Combustion

the cause will be has the valve seal is broken and black oil is leaking into the spark plug
