e36, transmission problems

Hi there,

I have bought a BMW 318i, year 92, this May and now the automatic transmission have problems. The diagnosis is that it has pressure regulator problem.

The gear indication light is lit and the car loses its power at first gear. But the subsequent gear is ok. By turning of the engine and then restart, the gear indication light is off and the car is back to normal. However after driving certain distance, the same problem repeat.

Anyone know if I were to change / overhaul, should I change only the pressure regulator or the whole transmission? I know it is quite costly to overhaul the transmission.

Thanks and Regards,

Sam

Sad to hear bro, but don't really get the hang of your problems. Are you losing ATF by the way? I personally won't advise just doing the pressure regulator as it involves downing and upping your gear-box. Why not do a complete overhaul if not get a re-conditioned one (which would save down time). Also check the history of the transmission e.g. were it changed before and when then post more details. I'm sure there are bros here with much better insight and experience to provide better clues.

hello fellow E36 owner..:)

sounds like death throes...ask me how i *know*....

i wonder if its the limp-home mode kicking in intermittently? either way, u should get someone to serously look at it.. it'll cost u a bit, but then a good job will last u another good no of years..:)

need a reliable BMW workshop, check thru the list, or send me a pm, and i'll direct u to someone i go to regularly..:)

good luck..:)
