got my E36 last week, still trying to figure out the car, can anyone please tell me what does the square boxes below the odometer that lights up for a while when you start the engine means? mine looks something like this [][][][][][] _ _

Re: E36 odometer display

that's the service indicator light....as the number of green lights decreases, it's time for servicing..

Re: E36 odometer display

Welcome to the e36's club. every bar is about 3,000km. So when you are left with 2 green bar, it is due for servicing. Care to join us this Friday nite for supper with other fellow e36s ? can contact me @ 91477259 :)

Re: E36 odometer display

Usually when those bar dissappeared, another indicator will show to indicate the type of service required e.g. oil service, normal service and inspection service. But of course that kind of indication is limited to bars found on your odometer... If its other "bar" you are talking about, then the service varies greatly. Jin Teck got full information on these.....:)

Re: E36 odometer display

having own a E36 myself...you can reset those lights fairly easily with just a wire...google it up...

Basically having talked to my mates at BMW...the service is really just an oil change and new oil filter...

E36 autos have the so-called "life time transmission oil" which is redish~pinkish colour...despite regarded not require change, its best to do so every 5 years dependant on how much milage you pound...

But changing your engine oil in my opinion is quite important...it also means having to get new oil filters too...

I generally do it myself every 3 months using Castrol GTX 10~30...a fairly thin oil...but due to NZ's weather temperature...SG might require thicker oil...an area I cannot comment on due to my lack of SG temperature experience...
