E36 M3 Cams

Guys,

i recently installed M3 cams into E36 325i (manual). I came across that cone filter (K&N) cause suffer a lot on Low end but improve upper end. Thinking of trying to use back the ori airbox with normal panel filter. Before waste money, would like to know any of you out there have any opinion of my modification whether i should stick with cone or panel filter for the sake of power improvement.

At the same time i also try to use fuel regulator for controlling my fuel pressure to optimise the performance. currently set to abt 3.7 bar. Or any suggestion of what setting shd i set to compromised with the type of filter i use.

your input is highly appriciated.

Re: E36 M3 Cams

K&N does lose a bit of low end depending on the size of the filter used.

Cams will lose ur low end as well if u do not have a matching map to advance the timing.

Our normal fuel pressure regulator is running around 3 bar so 3.7 sounds ok for a NA car but u will need to put all three of the above to run in harmony to optimise the performance.

Re: E36 M3 Cams

The cone filter is a quite small in size. As what you said remaping the ECU to compromised the cam. Might have to look for aftermarket chip to compromise the cam. Ori chip is not suit for the M3 cams.... any1 care to share what are those type of chip can go with M3 cams ????

Re: E36 M3 Cams

you might also want to look at whether there is adequate shielding for your cone filter, because if it is not done, all you are sucking in is very hot engine air.... sheilding the filter may be a better first step. I had an E36 before and this helped heaps when I installed a cone filter, but generally use the biggest filter that you can fit.

Re: E36 M3 Cams

Hi E3,

M3 cams sounds nice and as you found out, gives you top-end at the expense of low-end. From what I understand, you needed two things:

1) A chip cut for M3 cam optimization. You can get this from Mark DeSilva, Pls check E34 group in Bimmernut forums. Mark can cut you one for about US $250.

2) Low-end torque needs long intake runner. So, if you cone filter is just behind the headlights, your intake tube is too short. You need to make the intake runner so that the MAF unit hangs downwards so the Cone is actually pointing down very near to your fog lights.
I have seen some guy in US with the same issue and solved it with Chip plus Long intake runner. Seems to make a BIG difference according to that old post I read before.

Re: E36 M3 Cams

yes that would help.. see if you can locate the filter around the front spoiler... and you would need the M3 chip... or you could use a chip from one of the tuning companies like alpina or ac schnitzer you can find them on ebay in the US... lots for sale... just make sure that the chip is for your ECU....
