E36 Auto-trans fluid-to change or not to change...

tranny will fail anyway. most of us are not into street racing. so the tranny is not subjected to high heat thus breaking down the "life time" oil in our tranny.

my thoughts is that is a waste of money for peace of mind. but most people still do it. and it will fail one day as well.

Changing the ATF will help prolong the life and smoothness of your tranny. Cannot assume that if it will breakdown someday then dun bother to service it. Engine will also breakdown one day, why bother to service ?

If the BM boxes are meant to last a life time, why they bother to design filters in the autobox ? Why have a drain hole ?

You can service the auto tranny, flush or not flush is up to you. Some workshop will say that draining out the old ATF is enough while others say that flushing is better. I did a flush on my autobox and now it shift much smoother than before.

You can check with BVO Automotive for the flushing service...very professional about the whole process.

hey ghostie! i tend to agree with u! i agree that its also partially about the "peace of mind" knowing that there's fresh oil in the tranny.. what were u charged by BVO for the service? (do PM if its not convenient to openly say it here brother!!)

thanx

btw: those who've had to rebuilt their trannies, what sort of $$$ are we talking about? curious, since i see one such operation in the near future..:)

Ghostrider,

at what mileage do you flush the ATF? 60,000km? assuming normal Singaporean driving, i.e. lots of stop-start city driving.

how much does it cost?

(and why is it still called mileage when we are all using km?)

..maybe cos kilometer-age sounds a mouthful? (and k(i)mage is a hair salon....highly inappropriate..)

:p

Hi there, agree with u that oil needs to be replaced and the definition of lifetime (for tranny context) is only 160k thousand so unless u r ready to replace the tranny, it doesn't hurt to replace the fluid once in a while...

But then try to start from the start rather than leaving it for 100k then start changing...

Another thing... Flushing the tranny oil is useless unless the filter inside the tranny is replaced as well. U will get better drive since the oil is cleaner but in long run, it's not a good thing since the oil filter inside will get choked up and get bypass as well....

Yes it can... but depending on whether u car is still under warranty, u might want PML to do it for peace of mind.....

They charge under 300 together with the filter change
