E36 320iA Transmission issues

Hey folks,

Transmission has been acting up lately and was wondering if anyone can help. During hard breaking, the car tends to go into neutral gear and it takes quite a while (3 -5 sec sometimes) before kicking into gear (i can feel the car jerk) again. Is it something a simple ATF flush can solve?

Hello,

I had that problem two weeks back went to a mechanic and horror of horrors! the previous mechanic did not top up my ATF and it was almost dried up! Thank goodness i did not rev my car during this period said the mech, elas the gear box would have went kapu....

BTW another symptom i had was while slowly the car down to almost stand still and step on the gas pedal with the neutral reving for a second or two than gear kicks in with a jerk, if so you are on the same boat as me.....GO GET YOUR ATF top up!

The ZF 5HP18 autobox cannot be topped up in the conventional sense. You may have had a leak.
