How bad is the compression? Are you blowing seals and having oil leak? What's your oil pressure under acceleration?
If the CR is pretty bad now, ie. more than 10%.... it will get worst pretty soon, a rebuild is inevitable.
If the complete rebuild you mentioned, includes: harmonic balancing (crank/rod/pistons/flywheel) + 4 new pistons + new rings + cylinder work + rod bearings + new rod and cylinder head studs ..... then $5K is a good price.
While rebuilding, I would definitely stroke the motor to increase displacement and will consider bore-ing it further if the cylinder walls are already damaged. But the main concern would be the cylinder coating, can it be done in Singapore?
Bore and Stroke to 2.9L, S50 Crankshaft + S50 Connecting Rods + M52 Pistons.

There are no oil leaks or smoke etc. Apparently the compression is only below par on 3 cylinders and of those, only 1 is particularly "low".
I don't think the 5k price included all new pistons (!) - but it did include the cylinder work (not sure about the coating).
Having run the car for a few weeks now, I am now leaning to not doing anything for the time being as it actuallys runs pretty damn well - in fact it still has a lot of pulling power (even though i do not know how MUCH power i should be getting for this kind of car).
Another mechanic i saw (for 2nd/3rd opinion) also advised to run the car to Malaysia (at high speed) with some fuel additive that is designed to to burn off any carbon deposits. Is this something worth doing ??

This is hell worth doing, whack and whack your car on the hiway(m'sia) to see any carbon deposits bursting out from the exhaust. heheheh this one ahh u should be doing 160 above for a quite a distance. Do it at nite hehehehehe can see fireworks be:nehnehhh: hind kekekkekek

This is hell worth doing, whack and whack your car on the hiway(m'sia) to see any carbon deposits bursting out from the exhaust. heheheh this one ahh u should be doing 160 above for a quite a distance. Do it at nite hehehehehe can see fireworks behind kekekkekek:nehnehhh:

A few points:
Best way to get an m50 engine going better for the car, e34 or 36, is to lower the final drive ratio. The e36 is really over geared.
Try using thicker oil, see if it helps. The other more expensive options: if you keep car till COE end, yes its worth it.
No question 192 ps is way way stronger than the 150ps. But 150ps strangled by gearing. INHO 20% too tall of our conditions.

All i was told was cylinders : 2, 3 & 5 were less than perfect...
As for the "Italian tuneup" - may well put in the additive but dunno if i will hit 160 kmh (!)... i can just see the thing dying out on the freeway - then will have to do rebuild for sure! ;-)
Actually, the poor thing is really driving ok - think best to chill for a while and see how it goes...and if it starts to feel 'sluggish', take it in and do the rebuild once and for all....
