e36 318 iS Manual Transmission Question

Hi, the gear shifter is way stiffer in the morning. All the way from 1st to 5th. When I drove it for a while, the stiffness lessen. Anyone can provide some clue on this problem. I did a trasmission oil change recently but no improvement.

transmission oil too thick. but dun change thinner oil (advisable), cos not nice to drive after 5mins, is normal. Go to 120km/hr for 1 mins no more stiff.

ATF or MTF during your recent oil change? I believe yours should be ATF..

I face the same problem after I change to short shifter. So I think might not be the oil.

bro short shifter is a different stiff.. short shifter stiff is all the way u feel the same..
u short also dun post in forum ma.. hahahahahahaha

i use UUC short shifter always same till i change thicker oil. I assume almost all 318iS is MT, tat why can feel from gear knob shifting. Is like morning, gearbox like a virgin, then u sayang & tickle till wet, whole day & smooth liao.. bro jin teck u always go damalu ask for 15mins one mei?

Experience the same thing here, after driving for a while should be ok. Can try changing to Torco oil from R2D.

Btw anyone here tried overhauling the manual gear box?

I have the same problem with my coupe when cold. Baulky first and second gear change. Recently changed the gear selector shift bushings at BVO and the gear change is now more precise when warm. I am sure it is the gearbox oil.

Just an update on this stiff gear shifting episod. I finally got rid of the stiffness by reverting back to a stock shift lever from Z3 M short. Also replaced bush and inner cover. I'm a happy camper for now.
