Dump my GY Eagle F1 GSD3 for Michelin PS2 or Dunlop Sportmaxx

Had enough of my Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3. Getting noisy, steering dont feel good, etc....

Just checked with the best in SG/JB/batam tyre shop and waiting for revert on price of Michelin PS2 n Dunlop Sportmaxx. Hmm which one should I get.

Is PS2 an overkill for my slow/steady 320i? Price of PS2 possibly nearly double that of Sportmaxx.

Re: Dump my GY Eagle F1 GSD3 for Michelin PS2 or Dunlop Sportmaxx

PS2 is the champ of course, and the noise is very bearable, but I have used Sportmaxx before very very recently, and found it to have a very long `run in' period when it causes quite severe understeer and it felt very waxy and I nearly wanted to change it, but once it is truly run in, it has good balance, resistant to aquaplane even in super torrential rain. The grip is not even approaching Preceda 2 to my bum feel, the noise control is not approaching Preceda 2, but it has very little wall flex so you feel more in control.

I am using it on a very very heavy car though, so your own 320 should be different feeling.

(I changed tyre quite often the last 2 times because unfortunate running over debris, so I had the chance for Sportmaxx and Preceda2 in the past few months. PS2 was on another car so it might not have been a good comparo, the only value of this post is in the feel of Sportmaxx)

I have been waiting to purchase PS2 (225/45/17) for the past 2 months. No stock available in major tyres shop. Finally SE has stock but the date code is Year 2005.

Decided to change to SportMaxx next week with Date Code 0641 (Fresh Tyres).

Re: Dump my GY Eagle F1 GSD3 for Michelin PS2 or Dunlop Sportmaxx

Year 2005 is fine. Tires last 6yrs from the date of manufacturers but of course if u get older ones, ask for slighlty more discount. Moreover, u get warranty for buying tires so not much of a downside.

ABD, u are on 19in rite?
Go for PS2....superb treadwear, v comfortable, good performance at a hefty price tag but if u divide it for a number of days of driving, it is actually peanuts.
I know u can afford it...mai tu liao.

Re: Dump my GY Eagle F1 GSD3 for Michelin PS2 or Dunlop Sportmaxx

But Year 2005 PS2 Tyres still selling at S$320/pc :furious:

Re: Dump my GY Eagle F1 GSD3 for Michelin PS2 or Dunlop Sportmaxx

Just a side track, ever considered Toyo? I'm using the T1Rs at the moment... just finished run in... quiet, sticky (not that I've pushed it) and comfortable.

Re: Dump my GY Eagle F1 GSD3 for Michelin PS2 or Dunlop Sportmaxx

go for the ps2...

Re: Dump my GY Eagle F1 GSD3 for Michelin PS2 or Dunlop Sportmaxx

from Tirerack, 19" PS2s are 22lbs each tire compared to most others at 24 to 26 lbs.

This makes it the lightest of the UHP lot. Is this going to make a significant difference?

apparently, compared to the rest, PS2s give excellent ride comfort for 19" from the softer sidewalls and noise levels are also good.

Any feedback from those on 19" PS2s?

well some hiadees have told me that Toyo T1R is good. Ah Koon explained to me at his shop that the V grooves of Toyo T1R do not make so much noise as GY Eagle F1 GSD3 because there is a straight groove at the outtest shoulder area of the tyre which shuts out the road noise....now someone care to explain, I think here think there go libray do research also cannot figure out why. Touch the T1R before with my hands and do find the rubber sticky. Must hv quite a bit of silica compound.

Anyway I am a bit of a V-groove phobic now:lol2: so I will pass Toyo for now and try those tyres which positive feedback so far and has straight grooves instead.

For those on PS2, how long to do u run in or do u just harmtarm a brand new tyre?

really? :woowooo: .

1 kg = 2.2 Ib. so the PS2 is about 1 to 2 kg lighter per tyre compared to other UHP tyres for 19" der.

Woow....for 4 tyres, thats about 4 to 8 kg less...mmm, definitely worth considering. kam sia.

Well, check it out here, compare till you happy :yummie:

Search for Tires by Size

Attached here a comparison between 4 of the' usual suspects'...I think Sportmaxx is average, while Bridgestones are generally on the heavier side. Cant find spec of T1-Rs though.....

Rim Width Range

My rims are 8.5J with tyre size 235/35/19 all round at the moment.

Question: Can I use my current rims(8.5J) and have a staggered set up instead, per the BMW recommend 225/35/19 front and 235/30/19 rear. On tirerack.com, it says for example 225/35/19 can fit into a rim width between 7.5" to 9", which means that my 8.5" rim width can have a 225/35/19 tyre at front? Similarly, can I put 255/30/19 at the rear on my 8.5J rim.

I assume if tirerack says so, then it should be safe?

I would imagine staggered tires work best with staggered rims, so I am not sure if running staggered tires but for non-staggered rims is alright. Need to ask the experts here......

My 235s already look slightly stretched over 8.5j rims; although recommended width for 255s is 8.5 to 9.5, I would imagine 255 to look terribly stretched.

Plus 255s Sportmaxx is already into the 26lbs range, so tires are definately heavier.

Re: Dump my GY Eagle F1 GSD3 for Michelin PS2 or Dunlop Sportmaxx

For the same specs, some tires look quite stretched than others even fitted on the same width of rims.

For eg Sport Max 255 looks ok on 9.5J but if u put Mich Pilot Sport, it looks overstretched. These have all to do with the sidewall and tire shoulder construction.

ABD
I hv tried artificial staggering by tires before and I really didnt like the way the car handles..it feels floaty. For your case, dont bother..just put 235 all round:)

Yeah, before my Sportmaxx, I never rubbed at the back. Now I rub all the time, proving that for the same spec, Sportmaxx's are very wide/square...

Re: Dump my GY Eagle F1 GSD3 for Michelin PS2 or Dunlop Sportmaxx

Ok bros, thx no staggered for me then :)

BTW any bros who had recently gotten 235/25/19 PS2 with good price can PM me and reveal secretly how much u got them for?...kekekeke

PS2 is w/o a doubt the most comfortable UHP available today.
I m running on 19 and the comfort level is amazing.

With regard to weight, PS2 and CSC2 / 3 have similar weight.

Cheers

Re: Dump my GY Eagle F1 GSD3 for Michelin PS2 or Dunlop Sportmaxx

What about Bridgestone GR80 or Michelin PP2? Would those be what you are looking for? Was told that the GR80s are quite comfortable.
