driving in singapore with a foreign license

i am a Singaporean currently residing in the UK and currently holding a full UK driving license (which I have no choice but to convert my Singapore license to UK's due to regulation by the DVLA for me to drive in the UK). it has came to my attention that if I were to return to Singapore for a couple of weeks, i cannot drive in Singapore with my UK driving license (which is confirmed by the TP following my e-mail to them).

i find it ridiculous as i have no choice but to change my driving license and yet there is no special permit for citizens to drive in Singapore under this circumstances. it is definitely more ridiculous to change back to Singapore's driving license for a couple of weeks and later exchange back to the UK's again.

any advice?

Really?? I thought you can drive with a foreign licence for 1 year before you need to convert...

Worse case scenario... convert to international driving licence lor before returning to sg.

that only works for non-Singaporean citizen..

as far as i know the IDP serve no purpose except that it converts the description of your license into a couple of different languages for ease of car rental and in the case of being stopped by the police when you are in a non-english speaking country..

Hi everyone, please tell me if I'm wrong. Isn't our local DL issued with no more expiry date? If yours is issued here then there will be no ISSUE of you driving here, am I wrong? Unless the DL is also the same as citizenship matter, no dual allow?

i might have forgotten to add that when I converted my driving license to the UK one, I have to surrender my Singapore 's to them..

Pruss Huan. That's what I did for my Aussie Driver's. It works, just pay $25 for replacement.

the only way to do it in UK is by post.. you basically send the application form, cheque, passport and foreign driving license (which is clearly stated as a requirement and will be confiscated) by post to DVLA (a.k.a LTA).. after 3 weeks they will return your passport and the UK driving license by post..

I remember you don't need to surrender your Singapore license if you still holding your singapore citizen, unless you converting to British citizen or "indefinite leave to remain". I'm holding both license now

Sending your passport by post - back and forth .... I will not do it and will just get an idl from Singapore to drive there instead.

I am not exactly a fan of posting passport by post but that is the only way to do it since the UK had closed down all the branches of DVLA..

I have a possession of a Singapore IDL but that does not over-rule the regulation that I cannot drive legally in the UK using a foreign driving license after staying here for 180 days.. Tried to argue the point about the possession of IDL here but doesn't work..

Interesting .... Maybe times have changed - was based in London and never had a problem with idl previously.

You should get 12 months with an IDL if you are from a designated country. And Singapore is a designated country.

like what the rest have said,
when you come back to sg, make a police report for the lost of driving licence.
pay and get replacement licence.
now you have both country's licence.

I think time has changed. This sound like exchange for 5 yrs only! What happen after 5yrs? U lost both licenses? It doesn't make sense.

I believe the TP still have your singapore license record. Report lost and replace u a new one..
