Drink Driving & Accident...... What's The Smart Move?

Just over a casual conversation, some suggested running away from accident scene if driver is intoxicated (above limit). Apparently, the punitive actions on the failure to stay on accident scene is lower than that of drink driving. Now, is there really a loophole here?

Just for discussion purposes only...... What's your take?

Re: Drink Driving & Accident...... What's The Smart Move?

Depends on which punishment is more. I'd take the lesser one.

Re: Drink Driving & Accident...... What's The Smart Move?

i have heard of drivers running away from accident site... and then get friends to pick up the car... but that only works if no other party involved in accident...

so if whack into tree or lamp post, i guess one could run away... but if hit another car... then too bad liao, cos the other driver will have seen you.

not sure abt the difference in punishment though.. but who is to know you ran away in the first place?

That's precisely the premise of this thread. Drink driving is mandatory suspension plus possible jail terms? Definitely no jail term for failkure to remain at crime scene?

Re: Drink Driving & Accident...... What's The Smart Move?

Well it's stated that they have to catch you by ur car to prove u were drink driving right?. i've heard of some drink driving, crash the car... run off.. the next day police knocks on thier door and they will admit they crashed the car, came up with some reason that they got scared... so they ran off.. come up with stuff like tried calling a tow truck, thought all's good.. lock the car.. leave, nothing they can do then... cause they did not catch u in the act of driving under the influence of alcohol

ya, alot of cases the driver will run away n denied. The goverment shud do something to hit n run or reduces the penalty for drink driving.
Last year, theres this malay guy hit n run, killed an elderly man at ard 5am. Someone reported the number plate and the car was spotted at a workshop. The co-driver reported that his fren was drunk after a party, wat a fren to have!!

Ken,

It's true that there is a loophole. I have heard that some "smart" one even avoided going home cos they know someone will come knocking on their house pretty soon...

Then again, I saw this programme in UK where the police there did a survey by taking breathanalyser test on drivers in the morning and some of those who drank the previous night failed !!!

Re: Drink Driving & Accident...... What's The Smart Move?

Now if I flip the question around, and caught someone drink driving. Now whether I am at fault is irrelevant - the poor chap will possibly go to prison and has his license suspended. Would that not make it a dilemma for the chap? Stay and risk suspension and prison terms, or run away and "be assumed to be in the wrong" even though he might not be at fault?

Re: Drink Driving & Accident...... What's The Smart Move?

whatever it is DONT, NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER drink and drive.....

it is UNFORGIVABLE to kill someone while drink driving...

also, who could live with the thought of taking someone's life while drunk?

As with reckless driving or speeding...... many drivers think with their ego and pride, that their skills and experience are more than capable of handling cars at those speeds......

I started this thread because my friend's brother was convicted of killing someone on Balestier Road under unfluence of alcohol. No excuse for the crime whatsoever.

But he could have ran away from the scene, except the fact that he could not risk leaving the victim lying on the ground bleeding......

Hence the dilemma......

IMO, he did the right thing.

Like Montoya's recent ad says : If You Drink Don't Drive. Be Responsible.

I'd think the natural reaction by most people is to run away for accident caused by drink driving, be it leaving the car at the scene or worst, hit and run.
Making all sorts of excuses once an investigation starts taking place is just gonna be alot more difficult to face in reality than said. Imagine if the TP starts using polygraph then you are doomed.

So bottom line is, if u drink dont drive. If u think u hv breached the limit and run into accident that doesnt collide with other car(s) nor injure any pedestrians but your own car, then run off.

I encountered a situation before some 4yrs back when I was still driving my Opel Omega..some idiot ramped into my rear at traffic light when I stationary at Red. Well, his car ( Mazda 323 ) was kaboomed basically while mine was bit dented but trunk/bumper had to be replaced.

He came outta the car arguing with me that the traffice light was green. Yes it was green for right turn and I was not turning. He defended his point and I started to move closer to him, suspecting that he might hv been drunk...No shit, he was.
I pulled out my mobile phone to call police and he started begging for mercy. What a moron! Police still came in the end but he was gone and he left the car there. I dunno what happened to him after that but I guess he lied about everything. He paid for my damages all cash not to me but the workshop who repaired my car and boy, it wasnt cheap....

In Malay, it's called Mampus!
