Understand that unless I get air from grill or foglight area, other areas under bonnet gets no Cold Air, does the set up with like 'mushroom' filters or GruppeM improve air flow into engine and improve pickup?

Not necessarily. The manufacturers need to balance performance with noise. That's why the CAIs are so noisy.
The HP gain in a stationary car isn't much though. Boss dyno'ed and showed a 6-7 bhp gain with a drop in filter, but the original filter was a bit dirty so the actual gain is maybe 4 bhp. Don't know about the gains in a moving car since dynos aren't good at replicating that; I've read very good reviews about R2D Rod's air scoops at high speeds based on butt-feel.
I think coupled with a good exhaust system and engine tuning, you will get decent gains from a CAI. But again the main point of a CAI is induction noise, not so much performance.
To the OP: You might want to pop over to R2D's forum and ask about the air scoops. Heard they're pretty good.
my opinion is CAI don't really improve pickup.....its more for mid to high end.
how do u expect a hose sucking up air from the bottom to bring in that much air when moving off.
low end suffers and thats a fact unless u got air stored somewhere else like a capsule.
tried 4 to 5 so called air intakes and my take is don't waste the money....think logical in terms of airflow and u will get better bang for your buck
hype from the manufacturers, sellers, car mags should not be taken at face value...must discount that and make a better informed decision
Insulating your air intake box + air scoops + drop in after-market filters (eg BMC, KNN, etc) is the best modification you can do for the air intake area. Keeping the air cool in the air intake box is very important. When it gets hot, the car feels sluggish so its a good idea to insulate it like what R2D does.
bumpz for the heat shield but i think BMW needs to do something abt heat dissipation, knowing that their rides are known for high engine bay temps.
need to let all that hot air out at the same time for things to improve....keke
