There is this new service whereby the public can get their DNA tested to know their probability of getting certain major illnesses such as colon cancer, lung cancer and so on... So that they can taken preventive precautionary against such illness such as change of lifestyle or buying more insurance on particular illness.

I wonder if there will be a reasonable market for this service here in Singapore. The package is 6000 USD which test for 68 illness. Will you take this test???

i agree that it sounds scam-mish... 2 questions for you:

1. How do you take precautionary measures against colon cancer or lung cancer?

2. Supposing the DNA tests really works and say, you are tested to have a high chance of cancer, will insurance companies still provide u cover once u disclose this?

IMHO better spend the $$$ of regular health check up.

Causes of major illness are 40% genetics, 60% living habits. Therefore there are smokers who smoked for 40 years and yet to have lung cancer while there are also non-smokers who died of lung cancer.

The point about buying insurances is to know what to get yourself prepared for... I believe insurance companies comes up with premiums quotations according to their own ways and is not affected by external sources. And the results of the test is highly confidental, so insurance companies will not know. According to those genetic scientist, having a high chance in certain cancers are a result of lacking in certain type of genes in your DNA composition. Maybe if you know you got high chance of getting lung cancer, this will serve as a motivation for you to quit.

Physical body check-ups are not as efficient since you need to first develop symptoms before detection. And colon cancer are usually in its final stage before it can be detected by a colon scan. So an example is if you have a high chance of getting colon cancer, you should insist on a colon scan if there has been enduring pain in your stomach.

LOL.... I think DNA percentage match is easily available in SG hospitals... haha.

Okay.. the point i was trying to make is: Pay $6000 basically for someone to tell you that smoking increases your risk of lung cancer, you must exercise regularly, eat your fruits and vege, drink plenty of water, etc....

sounds silly to me..
