DMS tuning is in town

Hi guys,

just FYI, Rob Young of DMS is in town until next friday. So for those interested in getting a map, pls contact the usual suspects and make an appt. Last I read from the magazines, 335i map is "in development". I'll try to find out what's the latest so far.

Re: DMS tuning is in town

That's so cool, RB. Thanks for the headsup.

Re: DMS tuning is in town

RB, how was your sourcing in London?

Re: DMS tuning is in town

very expensive in London. quoted prices are quite a distance away from OMV so most savings are negated.

Re: DMS tuning is in town

I've been searching for dyno results of anyone who has got their car tuned by DMS but found none. I've heard a lot of positive things about him though but all based on feel of their car afterwards.

I finally managed to get my car tuned by him last Sat. I did a 'before' dyno before on the same day I took my car down to him. I did an 'after' dyno on Wed, 4 days after the new map came into effect. 2 baseline runs were done on Sat and 3 runs were done on Wed. I took the best of both days for comparison. The 2 power runs were almost identical :(

I asked Rob what could be wrong and showed him the dyno chart. He pointed out that there maybe something wrong with the car as there's a noticeable power dip (~13bhp) at 6,000 rpm from the charts. As he didn't have time to sort things out since he's taking the flight out today, he returned my program back to stock and returned my money. But I could feel that my 2nd gear above 5k rpm is slower now. I still can't get over the near identical dyno charts though.

Anyone has similar or better experience?

Re: DMS tuning is in town

unless you force inducted your car.... or your car is force inducted...

or you need to break the max speed limit badly(m3,m5,m6).... then tune your ECU...

else...the stock ECU is there for a reason..overall balance...

i wont touch the ECU of my current car... never...

just my 2 cents

Would you be able to post up both comparison dyno charts? Include relevant information such as AFR plots.

What about the torque graphs? Were they similar too?

Re: DMS tuning is in town

I did not request for a lamda sensor for both dyno runs though on hindsight, I should've done that. The AFR should've leaned out on the latter run.

The torque graph is very similar to the power chart ie. near identical from the 'before' run with a similar dip in torque at about 6k rpm.

While my results may not have been positive, we should not jump to conclusion that DMS is not worth its money. They've been around the market for a long time and I'm sure they're credible in some ways. They've been getting a lot of positive reviews from UK, not just Singapore. And I did talk to Rob couple of months back on the after effects of tuning. He seems to know his stuff like what happens when the knock sensor senses lower octane fuel, will the tuned program still retard ignition timing? Etc, etc.

With regards to his being in Singapore, he has caught the flight out on Friday evening, thus was unable to look further into my problem. I would say his attitude is very professional. He returned the money to me without asking saying I needed to sort out my car (with respect to the power dip at 6k rpm) before he could work on it again. Money back guarantee is not explicitely mentioned during the engagement but if you feel strongly about it, I guess it will not hurt to ask nicely :)

Re: DMS tuning is in town

Any self-respecting person would gladly offer a money back guarantee if he really stands by his work. Isn't this the proper way to do any kind of legitimate business?

The "not-made-in-Singapore" mentality permeates our consciousness. Out of goodwill I've advised friends/relatives to do certain things to their cars and they obstinately refuse, yet when some Japanese or German or Australian comes into town demanding the exact same things to be changed, they're suckling at their tits.... makes me ashamed to be a Singaporean. Yes, many of them offer experience far beyond what is to be expected, but a lot of it is irrelevant to production cars meant to be driven on the street. And considering the downsides in terms of lack of local support and cost, it really makes me wonder why some folks continue to blindly follow the herd.

Anyway, good on you for doing the dyno. He may be right, your car may not be mechanically sound, but at least you took an effort to validate the claims. Everyone in this trade should really be held to higher standards.

This I agree whole heartedly :) Just that no one in Singapore tunes certain marques due to lack of demand locally so I'm 'forced' to look beyond our shores... Anyway, I've figured out the previous tuner from US has screwed up my fuel map causing the power dip at 6k rpm. Am trying to get that fixed. Sigh...

You'll be surprised at how a little 'optimising' of your car's ECU fuel/ignition map will yield slightly more power AND fuel economy. All ECUs from the factory are slightly on the rich side for fueling and ignition timing slightly on the convervative degree.

I do agree that turbo cars will yield more noticeable gains. I had amazing gains in my previous turbo car and still retain driveability. NA cars too will benefit. It all boils down to how much it cost.

I'm never a believer in 'leave it stock'. Then again, to each his own :)
