Different tyre for front/rear - can or not?

I always see motorbikes with staggered tyre set up where the rear wheel is not only substantially wider than the front, but also is of a thread pattern of type of tyre that is very differently from its front tyre. I am talking abt those performance motorbikes, not little scooters.

Question is can this be applied to our cars. i.e. , use different brand/model of tyre for front n rear.

For eg, eagle F1 or Toyo T1R or sports maxx in front
but use a 'semi-slick tyre' like at the rear for better grip to push start our RWD cars. I cant remember the models but I know TOYO has one such model....basically adopting the motobike type of set up in our car, with or without tyre size staggering.

abd
it's pointless for street driving. If u want more grip at the rear, do a staggered set up of regular street tires.

For cars like BMW tho they are RWD, the cars still hv high tendency to understeer.
Various ways to correct or help alleviate the problem...like dialing more negative camber in the front, put more stickier tires, reduce tire pressure, running softer setting of anti roll bar...

In my experience, i hv got all those things I mentioned above but I hv yet to try to put a slightly wider than factory reco tire in my front set up to correct the inherent understeering characteristics found in E46, even M3

Currently on 235/265 front and back, I'd love to go with 245/265 for track use or if my front rim width permits, 255!

Cheers

btw, that toyo tire u were talkin bout were Proxes R888

Re: Different tyre for front/rear - can or not?

Ading to what Triple M has advised - i currently run the R888 on track days but for normal street driving i think it aint worth it coz it's only a 180 type tyre so it will burn rubber pretty fast .... reckon maybe 10-15k clicks and its gone. And beware coz its a semi slick not advised to speed on rainy days altho not so bad as the A048's.

Go for staggered !

Cheers !

Your mod list is getting more & more interesting....keke.....

Re: Different tyre for front/rear - can or not?

i believe mixing of tire models is, generally speaking, a bad idea.

a wear rate of 180 is pretty decent. bridgestone re050a runflats have a wear rate of 140 and still lasted me about 20k, including one track day.

Re: Different tyre for front/rear - can or not?

140 is atrocious

Anyway, to run semi slick tires for street driving is bad for 2 main reasons ( well IMO )
1. Dangerous in wet
2. Noisy and uncomfortable

The best that one can do is really to look for R compound street tires..Not many available. I can think of a few like Potenza RE01R (limited sizes locally) , Falken RT615 ( I m using it in my Spec C ), Federal 595RS and to a smaller degree is the Mich Pilot Sport 2
and do not expect them to perform like semi slicks tho.

Hey triple M, your volks are 8.5 and 9.5 right? are your tyres stretched? cos i'm getting some 19s and i was afraid that 235/265 setup might fall off the rim under hard cornering. i.e track use.

also, between toyo t1R, AD07 and dunlop sportmax, which one should i go for? i want budget without being too crappy. heh

ah beng, sorry for the OT

Re: Different tyre for front/rear - can or not?

235 n 265 sit perfectly on 8.5 n 9.5
in fact, they form the rim measurement for tires of those sizes

For daily driving, I'd choose Dunlop SPmaxx
If occasional autocross or maybe 2 track days in a year, AD07 :)
